In replacing my cv boots today, I am not sure which way a retainer goes back on the axle.

After installing the new boot, the next step is to reinstall the inside retainer/washer on the axle that the cv joint stops against once installed on the splines.

I found the retainer, which is a little concave, installed one way on one end of the axle and the opposite on the other before removal.

This is not the outer split circlip retainer, but a solid inner retainer. I can't find any info as to whether or not the flat side goes against the cv joint or the concave side.

After a good cleaning and then reassembly of the joints, I was very careful to make sure my joint orientation with regard to the flat and tapered sides of the cage and nut were correct-flats facing outward away from the axle for proper joint movement, but just don't know about this inside clip.

It appears to be called inner joint concave washer.

One would expect concave side of the washer to go against the part with the larger surface, so, the joint.

I don't know Beetles but in 1975 VW deleted those in buses, and said in the tech bulletin that when rebuilt they could be discarded. You might take a look for similar Beetle tech bulletins.

Bus:
