I crossed the river... do I still count? I grew up in East Brunswick, and had a 70 bug in the early days. I've got a lot less property tax here in PA these days, so I can collect more cars. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

Acid rain is our least worry here |
It's easy to mock NJ, I know, I've done it.
I was a native, I had the right to and the knowledge to.
Many who knock the State haven't ever been here or their entire experience was running the NJ Turnpike which quite simply is the arm pit of the State!
You know, I was born here, grew up here, married here and then left. That was 30 some years ago. I always hated NJ for all of that time. Ironically I lived here back when NJ was still very rural and commuters to NYC were mainly north of the Raritan River, the great masses hadn't yet moved down to Monmouth and Ocean Counties. I grew up on Farmland surrounded by nature and open space. Woods, swamps, country roads, etc. Heck the Parkway was brand new with TWO lanes in each direction and it looked like a park with a highway through it! My uncle remembers when the pavement on 35 ended at Red Bank and from there South it was gravel and dirt (he's still alive so it wasn't that long ago)
One of the farms where I spent a lot of time growing up and I used to Play on and another nearby that I got married on are now both Monmouth County Parks! Nice to see that they weren't turned into fields of houses like so much of the other land was.
Three years ago I was offered a good job here in NJ and reluctantly came "home". I may be happier now than I was for many of those years trying to earn a few cents out of State.
NJ has its issues for sure, what State doesn't?
It is close to NYC and all the excitement that happens there, heck NJ has a very high quality social and arts life of its very own! Who really needs NYC?
The part I live in is beautiful with rolling hills, woods, rivers, lakes, etc. We have a National Wildlife Preserve down the street. Unlike Pennsylvania where I drove for 30-60 minutes to purchase almost EVERYTHING, here it is down the street. Shopping isn't an event any longer. I get home from work, eat, go shopping/run an errand and get home while it is still daylight outside now. In Pa. the "local" gas station was 15 minutes away, 30 minute round trip just for gasoline!
My income has increased substantially, I live in a nicer house, I have a company car and a company truck (along with a company credit card to fill the tanks with), Health insurance, I have TV and HIGH SPEED Internet coming from a cable in the street even!!! (Previously it was dial up and satellite.)
My quality of life is up in so many ways.
I do miss the open EMPTY roads. I miss the dark nights when you cannot see anything at all. I don't like crowds of people so I miss the solitude, I don't miss the bears sitting next to my car at night though (always startled me no matter how many times it happened.) I had a sense of self sufficiency before that I have given up. I now am tied to the grid and at the mercy of so many others around me.
To top it all off, my wife is happier, she also found a great job making 3 times what she used to make, we're able to save money now! She only works 10 miles from home, I work a hundred yards. The grandkids are only an hour away.
It is a central location here, I can be in the wilds of New England, visit 6 major cities, participate in water sports or wander into the mountains all within a short drive of home. I can even afford to stay there overnight now if I want to. Heck I can even afford to fly somewhere on vacation now.
While my job is year around, I really only NEED to be here continuously for 8 weeks in a row! Those 8 weeks are long and hard though. The rest of the time is just recovering from and getting ready for the next 8 weeks a year from now.
Yes, life in NJ for me is good, very very good. Color me happy!
Dave
PS yes, both of our jobs appear very secure, as well as can be hoped for in this economy at least. _________________ Stop Dead Photo Links how to post photos

I like New Jersey. It really is a beautiful State. It's too bad that all of New Jersey's ugly is right next to the tollways, and that's all anyone remembers. I'm always amazed at the differences in the landscape from North to South.
What always floors me is how much there is within 150 miles of you. A three hour drive can get you so many places. I'm in the middle of Nebraska, a 150 mile drive gets me to the airport.
A friend of mine's an antique dealer in NJ right outside Philadelphia, and it's a trip to hear him talking about going to Washington DC for an auction one day and Boston the next and being home for dinner every night.
I even think Atlantic City is 10X more interesting than Vegas though, so I'm a little different. I could do without all your traffic circles, that's not right, and you folks do seem to have an unnatural attraction to home improvement stores--is there anyplace in NJ more than a mile from a Lowe's or Home Depot? |

I too used to live in NJ, for overs 30 years, near Exit 3 and then Exit 8, now I'm a tax exile in PA. Taxes are about 1/4 of what I used to pay.
I grew up listening to my parents tell me how wonderful New Jersey was ... constantly trashing the city of Philadelphia, all lies.
You can't move somewhere else to solve your problems. |

Resident of Bucks County, PA., but I work in Ewing, NJ. Does that count?
Before I decide whether I want to be part of this thread, I have a question...
Eagles or Giants? Kidding of course... Not a fan of the Blue, but if it can't be Green, I will live with Blue.
Caught up with you, though you probably don't remember, at Campbelltown last April. Used to lurk in the Bay forum until I sold my Westy. Now have a '67 T1 in the stable. |

I've lived in Elizabeth for over 20 years and I'm very happy to report that there has been real progress around here over the years (and I'm not being sarcastic):
The refineries in Linden have stopped venting their waste fumes into the air. The air in my neighborhood used to smell like automatic transmission fluid several nights each week. Now they burn the stuff off, which creates those wonderfully surreal 20-foot high flames on top of the stacks along the New Jersey Turnpike.
More good news: the fat rendering factories north of me in Newark seem to no longer be in operation. Now I don't have to breath THAT smell as I soar up over the turnpike on the Pulaski Skyway.
And best of all, the Anheuser Busch Brewery still emits that luscious aroma of cooking hops as I pass by it.
