The rear trunk springs are a funky set up. I've never tried a gas shock back there, but you'd have to make sure that it's not under any sort of load when closed or you will bend the corners. I only say that, as they're gas charged to hold the lid up, so finding a compressed height shock might be the hard part of the job. Keep in mind that in the stock application, the spring is around a rod that pokes into the air duct below allowing it to shrink in size (become more compact). I only mention this, as I own a 65 Notch, and had a 71 Notch and the springs were noisy on both cars, and set up the same on both cars. The noisy springs were just something I learned to live with. I suppose you could spray white lithium grease on them to see if that will quiet them down, but if you live in a dusty area, the springs will attract dirt, and get noisy again.
