Hello Team,
My van got a mystery dent in the back door, right below the window, over the winter, possibly from a snowplow. I’m sitting in the repair shop and they don’t sound hopeful. “I don’t know if we can do this. We have to pop that window out and if we touch that rust, I don’t know. I don’t know if we can do it.” Yes, there’s a new spot of rust right along the rear window trim.
Honestly, they just want new cars, in and out. They don’t like the looks of an old van. I asked about some paint on another spot, you know, while they’re at it, and they him-hawed and said, “I just don’t know about these old vehicles. You might need a restoration shop.”
So who in Salt Lake can do this and isn’t scared of a vehicle from 1985?? _________________ '85 Westy, 2.0L Zetec Bostig Conversion |

I’ve always taken my ‘86 to
Driftwood/Wasatch Auto Body although it’s pretty much rust free because I don’t drive it in the winter because they salt the roads there. Not cheap, but they have always done good work for me.[/quote] |

Talk to the folks at VW Upfitters - they’re Westy experts and I’m sure will have a recommendation. _________________ White 89 Westy with 2004 Subaru EJ25 and Subarugears 5MT - Betty |

Driftwood in SLC did a great job on my former van, but I believe they have merged with another shop and can't speak to the quality or pricing of the new and improved shop. _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia EJ22 |

it sounds like the shop is just being honest.
they probably can't do what you are expecting....
we refer people with modern cars to a shop down the street and they refer people with old cars to us. everyone has a specialty.
knowing your limits and setting clear expectations are key to actually making money in these types of businesses. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 93 Multivan 5cyl 5M/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Updating this thread...
Atherton Collision is now Valley Collision and they don't work on vans.
Driftwood and Wasatch are now Cascade Collision and they don't work on vans.
Anyone got a time machine? Having trouble finding anyone that will repair a dent on my van. _________________ '85 Westy, 2.0L Zetec Bostig Conversion |

Here's a thought. Sign up for an evening body shop class at your local voc-tech school and do it yourself and amaze yourself and friends and family,, and plan on a new self-employed career when you walk outta yer shitty current job...
Or, perhaps see if your local voc-tech school program will tackle the job and take yer chances...
Do high schools still have trade programs? |

What about bulli Klinik, I’d rather drive further to have a job done correctly. What about getting a used hatch, and fixing yours when you can. Play with it and learn. I paid a guy to teach me how to do my passenger side. Looks good but not for long. I learned that if I want good body work, I d rather pat someone to do it right. It’s a hard skill _________________ 86 bostig syncro tin top

The best PDR (paintless dent repair) master craftsman in the Rocky Mountain Region if not Western United States is Mike at Utah ProDent:
prodentutah.com
He has over 30 years of experience and most high end shops in Utah uses DentPro. He is a vehicle enthusiast but will not work on alloy based vehicles such as a vintage Land Rovers. Don’t ask how I know |
