I’m having my 67 restored. Had the wheels painted black/white. It’s almost done. Problem is, shop ordered wheels from a dealer that labels them “up to 67”. The clips for the hubcap are really for “up to 65” since the clip inside the hubcap instead of outside the hubcap. They will only fit the domed hubcaps which obviously dont belong on a 67.

Has anyone else encountered this? Anyone find “flat” hubcaps that will fit on 65 wheel clips? 67 is one of the odd years and the shop couldn’t find true aftermarket wheels with outside clips.

I know that you already have wheels that aren't right for your car, but if you're going for an exact period-correct restoration, you might consider selling those and getting a set of correct '66-'67 wheels that'll take the proper hubcaps.

Swap meets are a good source for stuff like this and they occasionally show up here in the classifieds. You could also put up a wanted-to-buy ad over there.
There's an old ad for a set that's still up...might still be available > Used Wheels

Brand new '66-'67 wheels are available on eBay but they're expensive ($250 ea) > New Wheels

As others have said, the correct wheels are unique to 66-67. If you buy a used set of wheels, be sure to check them before you spend the money to paint them. It is quite possible that at least one of them will be bent and "wobble" when you install them. I came across this recently. I took a few rims to a local tire shop and had them put them on the balancer (no tire) so we could watch them spin. One of them looked fine but was bent and wobbled like crazy. Easy to see when it's spinning, but hard to detect on the work bench. You don't want to paint a used rim until you know what you have.

Also, not many shops have the five wide balance adapters anymore. They are available online but kinda pricey. I have one, and took it with me to the shop. They didn't have one, so I was glad I took it along.

Just some thoughts to consider.

If you're going to look for good used wheels, the 66-67 Beetle wheels are 4"x15". If you find 4½"x15 wheels, they are Type 3.

You can just jack up any 67 and earlier VW and mount the wheel onto the front drum to spin it. No need to go to a tire shop.

I have the generic steel Porsche-style aftermarket rims on my '66 that use the '65-down hubcap clips. I painted them black and white to look more correct. I too thought they only worked with domed hubcaps, which I didn't want. I found that the 66-67 flat hubcaps popped right on even though the mounting style is different than what they originally used. The caps fit tight and flush on my aftermarket clip-style steel wheels. I'd personally want the correct wheels for a restoration, but for a driver like mine, they worked out perfect.
