|
|
I have a question for everyone. My car starts and idles just fine, upon my longest test drive, the engine started bogging down after I got into third gear. Then it proceeded to act like a car running out of gas until it quit. It will start right back up, but do the same after third gear. Sometimes in 2nd if you push the gas to the floor it will bog down.
I have Dual Weber 34 ICTs....Could they need adjusting or synchronized? They are brand new.
Not to sound stupid , but how do you use the carb synchronizers that you buy. I have never owned dual carbs so this is all new to me.
Thanks in advance!!

With a lose of power at the higher end, have you check your valves? Sometimes is the simple things. _________________ Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation eff' leans on the doorbell!

Today I was driving it and had to keep pulling off to the side of the road. After just a second, i would pull back on and it would run good for a minute or two, and then start bogging down again. When I got home the engine was smoking hot.
Could it be getting too hot and bogging down like that? _________________ 69 Fastback Automatic |

Sounds like the timing is too far advanced. You're using an 009 distributor aren't you? The correct way to set it is with a dial type timing light, set @ 30*. Use the same mark you use to set the valves, and rev the engine to 3000 rpms. Set the distributor while it's at that mark, and it's at that engine speed, and let the idle fall where it will. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Now I'm really gonna sound stupid...
Is this what I do?
Start the car, with the timing light, shoot the marks on the fan pulley. Adjust the distributor until the lights flash exactly on the marks? Then tighten the dist. and thats it?
I appreciate the help, because the engine is getting super hot and I don't want to kill it. I think I even heard the oil boiling in it after a 10 mile drive yesterday afternoon.
Thanks again!!

If you have a dial type timing light, then yes that's it. You need to keep the total timing to 30* or less, or the engine will overheat and try to destroy itself. You have checked to see if the under cylinder tins are in place (located right above the push rod tubes), right? I'm only asking, because these are easy to forget, and are VERY IMPORTANT to engine life. Without them in place, the engine will run for maybe 15 minutes, before it starts to seize from being overheated. That's how important they are. From the sounds of things though, you might also want to see if your cooling flaps are opening too. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Try this link. It has helped me synch my ICT's. Before you adjust the carbs, make sure the valves are properly adjusted and the points are correctly gapped and the timing is set per Bobnotch's instructions. I set my timing with a 009 the same way and it works well.

Do you have all your cooling parts in place? At the risk of sounding stupid, is the rubber bellows in place between the car body and the fan shroud? Are the elbows below the fan shroud in place? It sounds as though there may be a big leak in the cooling system somewhere. Hard to say. If you are running a 009 with no vacuum advance, make sure the vacuum "pipes" on your carbs are plugged. I've read that without plugging the carbs, a lean condition is created which can cause engine temps to rise. |

Sorry. This link will help answer your original question of how to use carb synchronizers (assuming you are using the Unisyn style synchronizer).
http://aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/dualcarb.htm
I use this guide along with the one from Weber to adjust and synch my carbs and I've had success. Good luck. |
