Cam follower retaining springs (pair for one side of the engine) holds 4 lifters in case bores when assembling case. Some people use 2 pairs to keep all lifters in both sides of the engine's respective holes, especially if you are not going to change them or the camshaft, (such as re-bearing the engine only)
