1973 VW Thing   Price: 6500
73 VW Thing I purchased to turn into a decent mid travel off road vehicle. I looked at a lot of Things and this one had the best bones for a non fully restored Thing. The person I bought it from was the second owner and claims the 37,000 miles showing is original but I canít prove it.
It has been repaired in the left rear qtr and has some rot in the corners of the rockers just behind the jack post. The pans have been patched but should be replaced. The rest of the body is about the nicest I have seen with no rust on the package tray area and the nose has never been hit and no rust on the front clip. No rust on the door jams or door post. Under the windshield the body is perfect. It has a cracked windshield but will come with another near perfect windshield and frame. It could be driven as is or would be a good candidate for an easy full restore. All the lights, wipers and turn signals work. The only thing I have found to not work is the high beams, horn and the gas gage kinda has a mind of its own.
It is picture without a top but it will have a nice top frame that goes with it but it will not have a canvas. It will also have a set of windows that go with it. The top frame and windows are being shipped from CA and are due here by March 5
It had the typical VW oil leaks so I installed a new flywheel seal and while installing new push rod tubes I went ahead and installed brand new heads and 87ís so it is now a 1641. It has the proper dual exhaust and a 009 distributor. It has a new 36HP style dog house shroud and it runs great.
It had been sitting for quite a while and the wheel cylinders were frozen so I installed a new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, front rubber hoses and all new brake shoes.
It has the gas heater that appears to run and should work but I have not let it run long enough to ignite. Just something about igniting fuel under the hood although I have never heard of one of these having any issues with fires.
As I said this was going to be a great off road project and was starting to get it a reliable driver but while surfing on another site I found a off road car that I owned in the mid 80ís with the same engine it that my dad had built so I decided to make that my next restoration project hence selling the Thing
New parts installed include: Master cylinder, front rubber brake hoses, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, brake springs, reservoir hoses, both brake light switches, all fuel hoses, fuel filters, headlights, steering coupler, lap seat belts, rear motor mounts, cylinder heads, 87 piston and liners, push rod tubes, flywheel seal, clutch disk, plugs, dog house 36HP shroud, engine bay rubber, rear deck lid rubber.
I will add more as I think about it.
Wanted to add this has a clean NC title and if you live in NC you know what a pain that can be
