67 Chop Top Cal-Looker, price adjusted   Price: 13500
This car has some great history having been first built by Keoki then uprated/updated by Cal-Look legend Rick Mortensen.

Originally chopped and painted Inca Gold in approx 2003, the car was sold to a lady in San Jose until around 2008 when Rick bought it. Rick has been building and driving Hot VWs since 1970 so knew this was a perfect candidate to turn into a road trip car, capable of making the journey from Arizona to the VW Classic show in So-Cal without issue.

I bought and imported the car to the UK in January 2018 having followed the build threads posted on the "Cal-Look Lounge" forum. I've owned many similar spec cars but always wanted a traditional chop top, hard to find now and even harder to find in this condition and with this level of quality parts and performance modifications. I also know how much time, effort and cash these cars can swallow in the build stage. You must also ensure they drive well and are reliable, something which takes knowledge and experience.

An overview-

Rick built this 2276 motor himself, with the aim of drivability and performance in all conditions. To manage the heat of Arizona, the engine has many tricks up it's sleeve, including the larger type 4 oil cooler conversion by Berg, all the industrial tinware (often missing) around the exhaust header is fitted, Semi Hemi combustion chambers in the hand ported heads, Aux fan assisted oil cooler. There are many extra internal engine mods to improve oil pressure, flow and cooling. To go into all the details would take up too much space. Suffice to say engine longevity is achieved when such build detail is matched with quality part selection. The motor is totally tractable and is the perfect cruiser when you want to, but has torque on tap when you need it.

The wheels are traditional Cal-Look favourites, genuine Porsche Fuchs alloys. 7 inch rear, 6 inch fronts narrowed to 4.5 inch by wheel master Vaughn Machine. This enables the front tyre to sit perfectly and the wheel to fill the arch nicely. All four wheels were then painted/polished by Al Reed in Anaheim. Coupled with a 2 inch narrowed beam and kyb shocks all round, this car handles very well indeed. There is little body roll and it behaves itself in all driving conditions, allowing you to exploit that power, safely !

Gearbox is a built, freeway flyer item, recently serviced. Bolt on mid-mount and transaxle strap means it is quiet and positive in changing gear with the Berg shifter. The rest of the interior is equally well appointed and comfortable with Scat adjustable front seats, Autometer gauges (wired by Don Bullita) Land tach mount, Wink 5 panel rear mirror, fat biscuit trimmed door panels and Grant steering wheel. Rear roll cage.

Outside we see the very well proprtioned 4" roof chop. Black powder coated trim and handles etc compliment the subtle colour. The decklid is a genuine 67 that Rick hand fabricated the air scoops for in metal, then let in..like the super rare Empi eyebrow item..but in steel. The rear valance is removable to allow the motor to be easily removed. Berg dual quiet packs and one piece windows ? You betcha. New german running boards (powdercoated) and covers. 911 headlight lens. Fuel and oil systems recently serviced, with new lines (AN for oil) doghouse oil cooler and seals. Clutch release bearing etc

Please check out the photos and spec details. Overall, this is a great car with plenty of history and has been built and refined by those in the know. I don't get to drive it as much as I would like, hence the advert. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in this car and drive to another country. So many nice details, like the speedometer matching the gauges, the Si Modesti breather, decklid bracket that spaces and locks, custom centre caps, chrome steering column....

Feel free to contact me with your questions. Car is located in South of UK. It is registered in the UK, has a very recent MOT.

I can and am willing to assist in shipping this car, either to Europe or the US.

Possible I would sell without motor or wheels, or replace the current alloys with replicas, either Porsche or wide 5 pattern.

EDIT. Just completed a 1000km road trip to European Bug In 8 in Belgium.....trouble free
