Sapphire VIII 8 track/AM radio restored-Free Ship Price: $700
|
Restored 12-volt Sapphire VIII 8 track/AM Radio manufactured by Motorola for 1967 cars. This radio’s front plate is in very good condition (very minor pitting) and is suitable for Type 1s. This unit has all solid metal knobs-yes-all metal-usually these radios have plastic knobs; usually the front (outer) knobs feature peeling chrome like foil (I have quite a few of these in my knob collection) but these knobs are solid metal-quite rare to find and pit free. Unit has NEW OEM belt installed and comes with a spare. Head has been cleaned and demagnetized. All wires have been terminated with properly crimped female push on connectors (12v red, pilot light blue, speaker common brown, left channel white, right channel yellow). Mechanism has been lubricated according to manufacturer’s specifications. Tape player and AM radio plays great (lots of volume). All high value electrolytic capacitors have been replaced (11 in all). All controls (volume, tone, track selector, balance and tuning) work properly, AM radio wand tracks correctly and smoothly (often hung up with these models). Pilot light works but is not switched by volume control (not a defect, Motorola built it that way); it should be connected to panel light circuit. Overall dimensions are 8”x8”x3” and weighs about 8lbs 2oz (much heavier than most radios). Distance from center of knobs is 5.75”. Unit draws about 3 amps and has a new Littleton inline fuse. Free shipped, double boxed, Priority to US locations and well cushioned. One usually doesn’t see these units in such good condition (I do see a few front plates for sale-where are all the tape players that were behind them?). Shipping included to 48 states included. A printout of the manufacture’s service manual included (courtesy of theSamba). A used cleaning 8 track cassette will be included.
I am a retired technician by trade and restore radios as an enjoyable (but sometimes frustrating) pastime. I started by my desire to have an original AM-FM radio in my ’62 and ’66 T1s. I got hooked on restoring the Sapphire radios as a challenge and will be putting up more for sale as I’m getting older as I would rather see them sold here than at my estate sale or dumped at the curb by my heirs.
I find it frustrating that most radios on this site as well as on several auction sites are listed as "untested" which I interpret as not working (why not just be honest?). Like our ACVWs, these radios also suffer from rust. I have purchased (perhaps foolishly) many basket cases that end up being parts radios due to rust and corrosion of the controls or tuning mechanisms (they can sometimes be freed up with some effort), bias potentiometers and IF transformers. New parts are hard to come by; luckily electrolytic capacitors are inexpensive, transistors, which can be expensive, are available; other parts must be donated. If you need your AM radio repaired, please feel free to contact me-most radios can be repaired for under $100 within two weeks. Have a question, need advice on your own repair, feel free to ask-I’m retired-I have the time.
