Here is a very nice early 1964 1500 S Canadian TS sunroofRuby Red Squareback. This is an early model because of the push button dash & the orange needle gauges.
I have owned this car for about 20 years. It has gone through a pan-off restoration over this time frame. Lots of NOS, original EMPI, & accessory parts were used during the restoration.

History
This car was originally purchased at Golden Mile Volkswagen Canada Ltd. in Toronto. This was bought as a retirement gift, to himself, by the first owner. It came with everything you could get from the dealer at the time including a Perfection gas heater & Frankfurt AM/FM Blaupunkt radio.
About a month after he purchased the car he moved to Oakland, CA. The owner drove the car from Toronto Canada to Oakland, CA. In 1975, at about 60,000 miles, the car was parked in a garage where it sat for many years. I acquired the car in 2003 & have had it ever since. I have always kept this car inside while I have owned it.
Restoration
Body
About 2007 I decided to start the restoration. The car was mostly still heavily faded original paint. So, I had a local shop in Sacramento sand it down & repaint the exterior & door jambs. The trunk, engine compartment (most), & dash are all still very nice original paint. The car had no significant rust to speak of so that made this part of the restoration easy.
The paint is starting to show its age, 16 years old. It has a couple of chips, one small bit of bubbling at the driver's down lower front corner, & a couple of paint lifting spots on the passenger rear fender & hood by the front emblem. These will need to be address.
Chasis
After the body & paint were done, the car then was taken the rest of the way apart. The pan sides did have issues, so one side was replaced. It was then powder coated & reassembled with all NOS, new & rebuilt parts. It has 4 new BF Goodrich thin white wall radials. It also sports NOS EMPI Type 3 specific front sway bar & rear camber compensator. It drives amazingly.
Engine
The original engine was not with the car when I got it. I was told that it had a major issue & that is why it was parked. The motor in it now is an 1680cc with an NOS 69mm VW crank & Gene Berg 88mm forged pistons. Cam is NOS stock. The tin has been gone through for imperfections. Everything is powder coated or painted. Carbs were NOS but jetted up & enlarged venturi's to work properly with the larger piston size. Generator is a small diameter 12V rebuilt unit.
The muffler was an NOS Type 3 African muffler that Dave Orosco converted to an Abarth. If you do not know them, the African muffler can looked the same as the Abarth can but the intake & exhaust tips were different. He did very nice conversions for a fraction of the price. Plus you do not feel bad driving with them. It looks & sounds amazing.
Lots of time, NOS, & high performance parts went into this engine build. Not to mention everything was balanced end to end. From the fan, pulley, crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, & pressure plate. Separately & all together. This motor was built to look completely stock but drive comfortably all day with plenty of power. It was not built to hot rod or race. This is the smoothest air-cooled VW motor I have ever owned.
Transmission
The transmission was rebuilt by Rancho Transmission. It shifts smooth & easy as new.
Brakes
The rear brakes are all stock with NOS & new parts. The front brakes have been upgraded to CSP wide 5 Type 3 specific disc brakes. They all work great.
Wiring
The wiring is original & works great. Flat Euro tail lights, front turn signals, Euro headlights, rear reflectors, and gauges were all NOS at the time they were installed on the car. The dash push button assembly is the original one for the car & still in good working condition. The steering column was rebuilt by Gabriel Garcia using all NOS parts & using the original key & tumbler assembly. There are also 2 vintage EMPI gauges installed & working bolted under the dash. They read oil temp & pressure. There is a correct original brass EMPI globe sending unit running them!!!!!!
Rubber
Most all of the rubber on the car was replaced with NOS seals. What I could not find NOS I installed new reproduction. I believe the windshield rubber is the only significant seal that was reproduction.
Windows
All of the windows are original glass. Even the windshield is a VW Sigla.
Gas Heater
The original Perfection gas heater is still in place. I have never tried to fire it up. I have also not reconnected the fuel line.
Interior
The interior has been redone with new headliner & seat covers. All of the interior panels & armrests are original. The dash pad is the original dash pad from the car & is in amazing condition with no visible cracks. It is covered with a vintage (1980's) NOS DashMat. That is a carpet dash cover that just sits on top & protects the dash from the sun.
Sunroof
The sunroof was reinstalled with NOS cables, NOS & good used plastic pieces, good used gears, NOS handle, & NOS seals. To be honest I have not opened it since it was closed after assembly & testing. It should still should be working good.
