1949 Speedometer Pod Price: $500/$1000
|
Offered here is an extremely rare early 1949 ivory speedometer pod. Ivory bakelite pods were introduced in early 1949 with the first Deluxe models. In January 1950, the indicator lights were swapped left to right. This is the early version with the high beam indicator light on the right. These pods were used in Deluxes, Cabrios and Hebmuellers in 1949 and possibly January 1950.
This pod has been completely restored. Switches disassembled, cleaned, lubed and tested. All of the original electrical, and speedometer retaining screws are present. A new felt seal and cloth covered wires are installed. Indicator bulb sockets with NOS Hella 0.6W bulbs (not the later 1.2W ones) are installed. A correct A profile ignition lock is present and tested and has 2 keys. All of the screws turn freely. All of the indicator lenses are original and the correct color for the date of this pod (NOT repro lenses).
VW abandoned the use of these ivory bakelite pods in favor of ivory painted brown ones probably in late 1950. The ivory bakelite was very prone to cracking. And this one has it's obvious share of cracks including on the knobs. And a piece of the pod's lower left edge is missing. This cannot be seen when the pod is installed in the dash however. More importantly, the "ears" on the sides of the pod are perfect and crack free. Pics show this detail.
Some repairs were made to the pod as can be seen in the pics (grey material). As the brass ground fork was replaced, the original date code of the pod is not known. Some epoxy work was also done including reinforcing one of the more significant cracks with an epoxy bead on the backside. This pod was not reconstructed from pieces however, it was intact as shown before restoration.
An April 1949 speedometer is also offered with the pod. This speedometer has not been restored, however the needle moves freely and when the pinion is spun with a drill the speedometer indicates speed. The face on this speedometer is in perfect shape, no cracking or flaking of the paint (the glass is dirty in the pic). The speedometer also has a VDO service sticker on the side.
