1953 Barndoor Buggy   Price: OBO
Once upon a time, in the late 50s to early 60s, this 1953 VW Barndoor Single Cab was cut up, shortened to a 75” wheelbase, the steering system flipped, and the seating relocated behind the front beam.

It retained all the Barndoor chassis components, including the front beam & rear gear reduction boxes, the lower half of a barndoor single cab cargo floor, bulkhead metal, and misc parts.

Many years later, this Barndoor buggy was found behind a tire shop in the high desert sometime in the early ‘90s.
It was saved by an insightful VW enthusiast who intentionally kept it for historical prosperity—refusing to sell it to people wanting to cut it up for parts, which was the fashion of the day.

It sat behind his yard for decades until I finally purchased it in 2020 and began the resurrection to its former glory.

Brand new Rancho Transaxle "Pro Sand" with original Barndoor axles rebuilt and installed by Benco Transaxle.

Rebuilt barndoor brakes by George Schmidt from The Butcher Shop

Porsche 356 Master Cylinder brake & rear tail lights turn signals.

New General Grabber tires on vintage widened VW smoothie rims.

Rebuilt 1200cc 40 hp (comes with complete running 36hp, needs heads rebuilt) with vintage hop-up parts.

New Wiring harness- all lights work & wipers.

Custom Stainless Steel gas tank

Recovered front seats (original early barndoor front bench seat)

Street legal, Titled 53 VW Bus and tags registered until August 2024. My goal was to keep it era-accurate yet driveable, with some upgrades that were not visible.

Many extras come with it, including the NLA Vintage Warehouse rear shock tower conversion kit (which replaces the current OG lever shocks).

There is a lot of history. I moved out of state, and I hope someone can curate this piece of automotive history in Southern California.

Make an offer.
It's probably the most affordable Barndoor for the price, and you can have fun with it on the beach or in the desert. It gets attention, thumbs up, and many perplexed faces all day.
