For sale: an incredibly rare Teijo pick-up, built on the legendary Volkswagen Basic Transporter EA489. This vehicle is not just a classic; it’s a piece of automotive history. It is estimated that only 150-200 Teijo pick-ups were ever produced, making it a true rarity. Manufactured in Finland from 1974 to 1977 in collaboration with Volkswagen and the official importer WIHURI, this vehicle stands out as a significant collector’s item.
Unique Origin:
The Teijo pick-up was designed as an affordable and simple utility vehicle tailored for the Finnish market, with the cockpit and cargo bed specifically modified to meet local demands. The rest of the technical components, such as the engine, gearbox, and instruments, were sourced directly from Volkswagen’s product line. The result is a robust vehicle with the unmistakable charm of Volkswagen quality and reliability.
Vehicle History:
This particular example, vehicle number 9, originated in the late 1970s and was owned by the Finnish horticultural company VAPO (a specialist in horticultural peat). The original VAPO company stickers are still visible on the doors, emphasizing the unique history of this vehicle. It has maintained its charm over the years and is a true collector’s item for Volkswagen enthusiasts.
Features of the Teijo Pick-Up:
Engine and Mechanics: Equipped with a 1600cc VW air-cooled engine and front-wheel drive. The Teijo has been stationary for a while, and some attention to the brakes and a motor service would do it good. We can assist with these services if needed.
Exterior: The cabin still boasts the original blue factory paint, except for the front and rear fenders, which have been repainted. The engine compartment cover still carries the original “TEIJO” sticker. There are signs of use, but these only add to the character of the vehicle.
Cargo Bed: The wooden bed floor has been completely renewed, along with the metal frame. The dimensions of the cargo bed are 3700 x 2000 mm, with a maximum payload capacity of 1380 kg. The Teijo is not only a visual standout but also a functional workhorse.
Interior: The interior remains in excellent original condition. The seats have been carefully restored using the same material as when they left the factory.
