This 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 is a factory-built ambulance that was owned by the German Red Cross in Birkenau from June 1977 to September 1996. It was imported to the US in 1997 and spent time in California and Wyoming before being purchased by the current owner in 2021. The bus is finished in beige over gray vinyl upholstery, and power comes from a 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes emergency lights, Hella fog lights, an AM/FM radio, a CB radio, a car phone, a rear fold-down ramp, a roll-out stretcher, and side-facing rear seating.
The body is finished in beige with German Red Cross graphics on the doors. Equipment includes painted bumpers, Hella fog lights, bumper-mounted sirens, a roof vent, a left-side shore power hookup, and emergency lights mounted on the roof and rear bumper. Silver 14" steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with Vredestein Transport Steel front tires and Sprint ST rear tires. The bus features a front and rear torsion bar suspension with telescoping shocks at all four corners. Stopping power is provided by front discs and rear drums.
The front cabin features a split bench seat trimmed in gray vinyl along with color-matched door panels. A bulkhead with a sliding window separates the front cab from the rear compartment, and additional equipment includes a Roadstar AM/FM radio, a car phone, and a fire extinguisher. The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 140-km/h speedometer, a clock, and a fuel gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 58k kilometers (~36k miles), and total mileage is unknown.
The rear compartment is accessed through dual side doors as well as the rear hatch with a fold-down ramp. It is equipped with a sideways-facing seat and fold-down jumpseat trimmed in gray vinyl. Additional equipment includes a gurney, a CB radio, an oxygen tank, and first aid equipment.
The 1.6-liter flat-four features a single carburetor and was factory rated at 49 horsepower.
