Midwest Air-Cooled offers everything from routine service work to full mechanical restorations, and everything in between on all models of air-cooled VW's, including VW based dune buggies and kit cars. We don't offer service on water cooled/later model VW's, we are 100% air-cooled 100% of the time!
We build engines and transmissions in stock or performance configurations, for street, strip, or off road applications. Turbo fuel injected builds are available as well. We build type 1 Bug/Ghia/Bus and Type 4 Bus/914 engines daily. All of our engines and transmissions are built in house from start to finish, including the machine work! Speaking of machine work, we have a full machine shop in house tooled specifically for VW air-cooled engine work, including case align boring (on type 1 AND type 4 blocks), general case work such as machining for larger cylinders, lifter bore bushing, and cylinder head work. We have an engine dyno set up specifically for air-cooled VW engines, which is outfitted with modern data acquisition software. This allows us to offer dyno sheets showing the full HP and Torque curve of the engine. Additionally we have equipped it with the necessary wiring and fuel system to run and tune factory fuel injected late Bug & bay window Bus engines as well.
Our team has well over 50 years of combined experience working with air-cooled VWs. Our shop rate is $139/hr, however we don't charge for estimates on service & repair work. Quotes for engine builds are also no charge if the engine is apart and can be inspected. Please give us a call before bringing a vehicle or engine by the shop for inspection or a quote.
We typically have a backlog of VWs waiting to come in, so if you think you may have a need for service its better to call in advance to get in line. We bring vehicles in by date order from when they joined the service que. All customer vehicles are kept inside while under our care.
