1984 Vanagon Westfalia w/ Upgrades Price: 10000
|
We had a great run, but it's time to let her go. I recently replaced several parts and had a great VW mechanic clean out and tune up the whole system. Overall it's running great *but* it did just start making a rattling/grinding noise when shifting, which my mechanic says is an indication it will need to have the throwout bearing replaced eventually (the sooner the better). That's a $500 job, which I can't justify spending right now, so I've lowered the asking price considerably to account for it. The van passed smog and is registered in CA through May 2026. Most parts have been replaced or upgraded at some point in its lifespan. Here are the most important deets:
--316111 miles on the odometer, but to be fully transparent the mileage is actually about 318k. Several years ago the odometer stopped working and I drove about 1500-2000 miles before I got it fixed (works fine now)
--Gowesty rebuilt 1.9L engine installed at 305k
--Transmission rebuilt at 180k
--16 inch Mercedes wheels (upgraded from stock 14 inch wheels)
--Bilstein HD shocks at 313k
--Alternator & starter at 313k
--Clutch kit at 312k
--Catalytic converter + muffler at 311k
--New battery
--New fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filter
--New GoWesty instrument cluster kit
--Recent tune up
--Thule locking roof racks; also has a third pair of roof rack mounting plates so you can add another cross bar if you need it
--Kenwood stereo with CD player and Bluetooth
--Swivel seats
There's also a 180w solar panel mounted on the roof racks and a charge controller, both of which work fine, but I decided to take out and reuse the rest of the solar system for a portable camping rig. That said, much of the grunt work for setting it up is taken care of and I'm happy to show you what components to buy/how to get the system going again if you're interested.
Interior is in good condition, aside from the back curtain which could stand to be replaced. I took the fridge out a long time ago as it had stopped working (this is true of practically all original vanagon fridges). For now it's an extra cabinet but at one I did have a mini fridge in there hooked up to the solar. The propane stove works great.
Exterior-wise, it's in good shape overall. The windshield is cracked, which is $200 to replace at a nearby auto glass shop. Paint is in fine condition, certainly not showroom quality but only a couple scratches and minor dents. A couple tiny rust spots on the edge of the windshield and one of the windows, and some rust on the exhaust (very common) but that's about it. Feel free to ask any questions!
