1974 VW Thing
93k original miles.
Full inside and out restoration was completed in April 2022.
Rust free vehicle, originally from California. Original nose is clean with no prior accident history.
Professionally painted inside and out, however the paint has chipped in areas of moving parts (i.e. hinges and where the top attaches) If serious, I can send additional pictures. All doors, fenders, hood, rear deck lid, windshield parts, bumpers removed prior to paint. Rear deck lid, rear fresh intake housings, deck lid light housing and all windshield parts were sent out to sandblasting to rid of all old paint. All original parts are rust free. All 4 doors, hood, rear deck lid and entire dash were painted on stands. Paint was color sanded and buffed out.
Both front and rear bumper sandblasted. Rear bumper is powder coated and refinished.
The body is super straight. The pan is all original and rust free. The entire pan was stripped and refinished inside and out with POR 15 engine enamel to protect it for another 50 years.
All new seals for all doors, fenders, hood, deck lid, glass, seats, door handles, rear license plate light and lock, and miscellaneous rubber seals.
New rear taillights, new front turn signal lens, all new seals, new bulbs. Headlights are upgraded H4 with LED bulbs. New headlight trim rings.
New horn, new turn signal and wiper assembly stalk. Brand new main wiring harness (entire engine bay wiring to the main fuse box is all brand new) sourced from the Thing Shop.
The entire front end is all brand new: new inner and outer ball joints and arms. New steering stabilizer, new TRW steering box, new upper and lower ball joints. Upper shaft steering bearing and bushing. New steering column bushing. Full 4-wheel alignment.
Upgraded CB Performance front disc brakes and stainless-steel braided hoses. New rear brakes. New brake slave cylinder switches. Full brake fluid flush.
Gas tank fully cleaned and resealed with brand new inside fuel tank mesh filter and all brand-new OE German fuel lines throughout and oetiker pinchless clamps.
4 speed manual transmission was fully serviced: new axle seals, new input shaft seals, new transmission mount, new transmission fluid. new axles. New reverse switch.
New starter. New Interstate battery. New negative braided ground battery cable.
Interior is like new, rear seat upholstery is all brand new. Front seats are like new. Brand new front and rear seat belts soured from the Thing Store. Rubber floor mats and custom wood slat mats.
Brand new Alpine stereo with Bluetooth set up. New front speakers with custom housing care of the Thing Shop up front. Comes with 2 additional speakers that can be installed in the rear.
5 brand new rims with correct offset and new Bridegestone Ecopia tires. 15-inch upgrade from stock 14-inch for better handling and looks. Original VW hubcaps are all in great shape.
Brand new top and frame sourced from the Thing Shop. All 4 original windows are included and matched to new vinyl top grain.
New sport steering wheel installed but also comes with the original.
Engine rebuilt (1600 CC dual port motor long block) in 2020. 12v alternator upgrade, new distributor, new electronic ignition, new Bosch coil, new plugs, new ignition wires, new fuel pump, all new German fuel lines, new air intake hose. Rebuilt 34 pic 3 carburetor.
All engine tins, intake manifolds, were sent out for sandblasting and refinished to like new condition.
Rare S&S complete exhaust that exits the factory exhaust cutouts on the OEM rear bumper.
All stock components, heater boxes (sent out for sandblasting and repainted with high heat paint) and factory original oil bath filter are still there and function as they should.
The engine and transmission do not leak at all.
This vehicle had a small engine bay fire (ruined most of the electrical wires inside the engine bay areas, some engine rubber parts (carburetor intake hose, spark plug wires) and paint inside engine bay and deck lid areas in 2021. Original owner took the payout and sold it to a VW repair shop; thus, it has a salvaged title.
This vehicle required a thorough full brake and light inspection for new salvaged title to be issued, and it passed without any issues.
The title is in my name and is currently registered in New Mexico and is fully insured. It has been tuned up and adjusted for the high altitude.
