Up for auction is a one-of-a-kind 1971 Volkswagen Bus affectionately known as "The Flying Brick" — a heavily customized Type 2 panel van that’s been transformed over the course of 20+ years into a high-performance street machine. Built with attention to mechanical detail and packed with top-tier performance components, this VW is not your average Bus. It features a custom-built 2165cc dual-carb Type 1 engine, custom suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, safari rear window, and more.
I have several videos of the bus, please reach out for links.
Originally a 1971 panel van, the project began with a bare shell and no engine. Over the course of several years, a bespoke 2165cc engine was built from the ground up, paired with a modified transmission and suspension. After sustaining body damage from a falling tree during a windstorm in Seattle, the driveline and running gear were transferred to a 1971 gunmetal-gray donor shell. The engine received a full rebuild in 2010, including a new case, machining, and internal components. Since then, the Bus has logged approximately 750 miles.
The vehicle has been stored primarily indoors for the past 20 years and is being offered as a running, driving, and structurally solid project needing final cosmetic and interior finishing.
Highlights:
2165cc Type 1 engine with dual Weber 40 IDF carburetors
CB Performance 044 Magnum Plus heads (42x37mm valves, ported and polished)
Engle FK10 cam, 78mm forged crank, 94mm pistons, 1.4 forged rockers
MSD 6AL ignition with rev limiter, Gene Berg welded fan, Hi-Tek remote oil cooler
Custom Flowmaster 50 exhaust with 4" tip
Custom-built transaxle with 1.26 3rd, 0.821 4th, 4.86 R&P
Gene Berg 4-speed shifter
Lowered suspension: 4" narrowed front beam, drop spindles, adjustable rear
Cross-drilled disc brakes front and rear (no e-brake)
Stilauto 17x7.5" wheels with new tires
Custom safari rear window
Solid floor pans; dash painted and ready for gauge setup
Mileage since engine rebuild: ~756 miles
Stored primarily indoors for the past 20 years
Condition:
Mechanically, The Flying Brick is a beast. The motor runs strong (requires 92 octane fuel), the gearbox is geared for freeway speeds, and the suspension and brake upgrades make it handle and stop far better than your average vintage Bus. The structure is solid and presents a great foundation.
Cosmetically, this is a driver-quality body in need of finishing work. The most notable area is the rear driver-side quarter, which has older bodywork and bondo, the bondo has cracked and will need attn. Other surface rust spots are present and visible in the photos. Paint and bodywork are needed to bring it to show quality. The interior is largely bare and ready for customization. The dash has been beautifully finished, but most gauges are not currently wired.
Extras Included:
Boxes of spare parts, fasteners, seatbelts, and project leftovers
Full documentation and receipts from both the original build and the rebuild
Interstate battery, spare filters, and assorted new parts
Summary:
This is a rare opportunity to own a highly custom-built 1971 VW Bus that’s been thoughtfully engineered for power, performance, and presence. With a powerful 2165cc engine, custom suspension, and braking upgrades, The Flying Brick is ready for the road — and just needs a good tune up and cosmetic finishing to make it your own. Whether you're after a weekend cruiser, show project, or something truly unique, this VW delivers personality and potential in equal measure. Bus has been primarily been sitting in storage for the past 20 years with limited usage.
