This is one of those vans that rarely surfaces — a genuine, factory right-hand drive, German-built Kombi splitscreen that has recently had a full interior makeover, inc a brand new Dormobile side elevating roof.
The restoration was nothing short of obsessive. The shell was stripped back to bare metal and prepared with an attention to detail that most restorers can only aspire to. Every surface — inside, outside, and underneath — has been primed and finished in period-correct Titian Red over Beige Grey, matching the original 1960s Volkswagen palette. The underside wasn’t just protected — it was painted in body colour, exposing all the factory welds, seams and contours in full clarity, with nothing to hide. The finish throughout is beautiful and honest without ever feeling over-restored or clinical.
Open the doors and it just keeps getting better. The front cab area, with it’s completely unspoilt dashboard with original gauges. The steering wheel has been fully detailed and repainted in a tasteful two-tone to match the exterior colourway — just one of countless moments of care throughout the build.
The full-width Dormobile pop-top is a rare and desirable feature in itself, complete with new frame, hoops, seals and twin roof windows (including pop-outs). Inside the roof sits a twin-bunk hammock setup, making this a genuine four-berth camper. The custom headliner is trimmed in off-white perforated vinyl, styled to match the original Dormobile pattern but executed to a much higher spec. Down below, a full-width rock ‘n’ roll bed has been seamlessly integrated, with custom uprights to store the removable rear table when not in use. Upholstery has been tastefully finished to echo the van’s exterior tones, and cabinetry is finished in oak veneer with gloss black worktops, blending vintage cues with modern craftsmanship. The integrated double gas burner and Waeco fridge unit have never been used.
Elsewhere, a high-gloss striped laminate floor with aluminium edging lends the rear cabin a clean, modern feel without sacrificing its retro soul. A 240V mains hookup is fitted discreetly in the engine bay, powering an internal socket hidden within the cabinetry, while a 12V leisure battery system feeds USB charge ports, lighting and sound. Rear lighting is a modern, multicolour LED setup with remote control, allowing you to tailor the mood when parked up. The stereo is a RetroSounds Bluetooth unit with discreet 6x9s at the rear and an underdash speaker up front — great sound, period looks.
Mechanically, the bus has been subtly modernised to enhance drivability. A narrowed original front beam and IRS rear end with uprated gearbox transform the handling and cruising ability, delivering a more refined and usable driving experience than stock. The engine is a reconditioned 1600cc twin-port, running strong with good ancillaries and a tidy installation. The whole setup feels balanced and ready to use, with no drama — just turn the key and enjoy.
Every inch of this bus has been gone through with care, and it shows. From the tone of the interior fittings, to the paint finish and untouched door bottoms, it’s an example that speaks to the very top end of restoration work. Add to that the rare original spec — a UK-supplied RHD split in one of the most desirable colourways — and this becomes a genuinely special offering.
