1987 Vanagon Westfalia
This is a very original Westy camper. It has a few upgrades, but if you prefer your Van as VW intended or as a clean sheet to start your build with, this one is great. Colorado, rust-free van. Paint and some of the cosmetics are not perfect, of course, but it is a great, useable van as-is. Being an 86, it has the larger 2.1L engine, which runs very well. I feel like vans like this with patina and cosmetic wear are so much easier to camp and explore in because you aren't worried about a rock chip or a tree branch.
Some upgrades – South African Headlight Grille with Hella H4 headlights and custom driving lights (much better than the original ones). 2” Receiver hitch is perfect for a bike rack or hitch rack for extras. Factory 14” Alloy wheels are a little wider than the stock steelies, and brand new, slightly bigger 8 ply all-terrain tires. ABS sliding door panel, Fridge removed and replaced with shelved storage, house battery with inverter, roof racks on pop top, upgraded rear hatch shocks.
It drives great. It has 248k miles, so obviously has been taken care of and used for it's life. I've seen vans with 100k that are in much worse shape. The van is very rust free - both on the seams and underneath.
You can find a similar van for cheaper, and then find it has hidden rust and lots of mechanical issues etc. and spend lots more, or get this one and start using it next weekend.
