This has been my daily driver/work truck for 7 years. I’m making some changes and it’s time to let her go. Gowesty appraised her for $48,000 in May of 2017. I can email a copy up on request. I’m asking a firm $35,000.
This transporter was originally registered in Bosnia. It had low mileage but had been worked hard! Lots of dings and work related body issues but no rust. It was in England when I bought it and I had it shipped to the US.
From November 2015 through the spring of 2017 it was completely rebuilt and has since been my daily driver and work truck for my custom woodworking, and boat building business. I’ve also use it when I travel to teach boatbuilding and woodworking classes.
The work done:
Full bodywork and paint. Everything was taken apart for a full respray. All parts underneath repainted or undercoated. Everything removed inspected and replaced as needed. Refinished gas tank with all new gaskets, lines, straps and seals. New South African front brakes. New stock rear brakes. All new brake lines. All new stock suspension. New CV joints. New bushings. FAS in line- 4 engine. Zero miles, new factory engine with all new exhaust. Rebuilt transaxle with .82 fourth gear, positraction and decoupler. No lockers. New shifter linkages. Cruise control. New clutch. New stainless steel coolant lines. New radiator, heater core and fan. Added power steering. Stock front bumper. Stock rear bumper with Burly hitch and trailer wiring harness. New truck mirrors
Interior: New insulation, carpet, rubber mats, door panels, new visors and headliner. New upholstery on bench seat and matching heated vanagon seat from a tintop. New instrument cluster with tachometer and MPH speedometer. Rebuilt odometer set to zero miles. Reworked vents, new heater fan. LED dash bulbs. Volt meter. USB outlets, light, inverter. New pioneer sound system with door mounted speakers and small pillar mounted speakers. New tail lights with LED brake, reverse and tail light bulbs. Fog lights. South African lights and grill. Custom powder coated aluminum lumber/kayak rack built by Erica Moody with spare tire holder, gas can and bike rack. New wiper arms. 3 seat belts. New battery. Battery maintainer. New windshield
What she needs:It’s been 6 years since the rebuild so there are signs of use and appropriate wear and tear. The paint work was marginal and some seam rust and bubbling paint are starting to show through. The passenger side step needs some attention. The under body and frame are near perfect. The speedometer is not working. The cable itself is new so the fitting where it connects to the front transaxle needs to be replaced. The odometer shows about 20k but I’ve put closer to 27k on the rig since the rebuild. Because of the cable issue the cruise control does not work. The tires are OK Geolanders from Yakhima. The South African headlights will need to be replaced at some point. They are not very well weather sealed. Parts are no longer available so changing to the new LED single headlight option would work well.
Over all this is a strong Transporter. She runs and shifts better than any Vanagon I’ve ever driven. The folks that did the work for me were all top notch and I’ve taken good care of the transporter while we have worked together. She just needs little refresh to be near perfect.
