1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia – Automatic – Mechanically Excellent
Well-sorted 1986 Westy with rebuilt 2.2L Digifant engine and rebuilt automatic transmission. I'm the third owner; it was one-owner until 2017. Since 2019 I've completed extensive mechanical restoration, making it a reliable driver and a great platform for camping or continued cosmetic work.
Major Mechanical Work (Documented):
• Rebuilt engine + new heads (165,700 mi)
• Rebuilt transmission
• New radiator, stainless coolant pipes, water pump, thermostat housing
• Complete fuel system overhaul (lines, injectors, filter, pump)
• Rear brake overhaul + new master cylinder
• New CVs/boots, ball joints, wheel bearing
• GoWesty transmission cooler
• Push-button start (ignition bypass)
• New starter + power steering pump
• Thule roof rack + Fiamma-style awning
Interior / Exterior:
Runs strong. Classic Westy interior intact with normal wear. Stove works; sink and fridge untested. Pop-top works manually (H-bar assist broken).
Known Issues:
• Some window-sill rust
• Dented/rusty fuel tank + rusty propane tank
• Minor mildew on pop-top liner
• Rear right seatbelt buckle missing
• Cabin blower fan inop
• Small power steering fluid leak
Smog Update (Dec 2):
Failed CA idle portion (high HC/CO). Passed higher RPM test; likely a minor emissions component (vacuum leak, sensor, idle valve, etc.). I don't have time to troubleshoot, so selling as-is.
Out-of-state buyers: No smog required in most states.
California buyers: Will need to repair before registration.
Extras: Thule rack, awning, stainless fasteners, offset window cranks.
