I have gone through this one and have replaced the bezel with a new chrome one sourced from Germany. I have developed a method to roll the bezels back on and looks like it never happened.
Ran it for the past 3 days on the bench, see the last few pics with time stamp in the photo metadata. Has kept accurate time. This one has 1.70 manufacture date code of January 1970. VDO Kienzle Germany and sold through VW dealerships. The thumb button makes it unique and has the VW logo on the housing.
It is a standard 52mm diameter and places like ISPwest sell the grill with a hole bade to fit it.
I don't often call something Rare but these are.
