1982 Vanagon - California van garaged in Boston Price: 12,500
|
1982 Volkwagen Vanagon Westfalia
2.0L Gas
I moved internationally and my poor van just sits in the garage now. It's clear I'm not moving back soon, so I'm ready to let my beloved van go to a home that can appreciate her.
Actual mileage unknown (came with a broken odometer, replaced it with another broken odometer with even higher mileage on it, then replaced it with a new one that's at 10,000 miles or so...) Purchased by me in San Diego, CA in 2005 - west coast van until about 10 yrs ago and garaged in Boston since.
The good:
- Starts up every time and runs strong - last time I drive it was 2 years ago for a road trip in New England. I'm confident it would start up again but haven't tried since the gas has gone bad and I don't have a siphon.
- Newer paint and seals with almost no rust (~10 yrs on the paint but mostly in the garage since then - I've got photos from before/during paint somewhere I can show you there's nothing hiding under there and any fixes were done right).
- Upgraded with large oil cooler (mounted behind the grill, stainless steel lines and does not leak)
- Solar panel (wired into the main battery – does not have a second battery)
- Upgraded front seats with arm rests from '86 van (still swivel/turn around like the originals, but are a little taller)
- Upgraded with big bore heads for better performance in the last rebuild (2008? Only about 30,000 miles on the engine after rebuild)
- Reupholstered back bench seat and rear cushion (incl new foam)
- New curtains (I've got the originals as well, but they're not in great shape)
- Dimmable LED Christmas lights wired into the main battery
- Upgraded stereo with Bluetooth & USB inputs
- New working odometer (with a little over 10,000 miles on it)
- Bus Depot Ezy Awning
- Added tachometer, head temp sensor, and oil temp sensor
- Comes with a box of random spare parts (some from this van, some from other vans I parted out while living in California)
The bad:
- Unknown transmission (I had the transmission rebuilt in 2008, but it started getting stuck in 4th gear after maybe 20,000 miles. I replaced it with a used transmission - the van also comes with the old transmission that can be rebuilt again to save you core charge)
- Sometimes the car has a racing idle
- Fridge does not consistently work on propane. Works fine on electric.
- Water tank has a leak somewhere near the filler neck – if you keep the water level below the fill tube it still works just fine
- Fuel tank has leak from filler tube – if you don't top off the tank it won't't leak (I've fixed this once before when I first got the van, but the fuel lines seem to have cracked again in that area, or perhaps its another one that I didn't fix…)
- Interior door panels are missing on slider and rear hatch. I planned on replacing them cuz they were pretty beaten up but never got around to it.
- Head rests on front seats both have holes in them (fairly common in the ones from this style - I have extra fabric from the interior remodel but never got around to making covers for them)
California car – never had much rust (had some beach rust, still has a bit in the seam in the front bumper) – all bodywork and new paint done before I moved from California 10 years ago. Kept in the garage since then. Never been in a serious accident, but someone had backed into it while I had it parked on the street – left side panel was replaced from a donor van when I had it painted. Rear hatch is from an '86 – the old one had a rust spot under the window, so I swapped them out when I was parting out a (rust-free) van before the paint was done :)
Looking for someone who is happy to finish the restoration I started and give the van a little TLC and some adventures.
