***I started Strictly Foreign in June of 1984. I graduated from ATCOA VW school in Carson California in 1979. I started as an apprentice at the local VW dealership in Anaheim, CA. After 12 long months at the dealership and not many air cooled VW's to work on,I went to a local independent VW shop (Uwe's Auto Buggy Service) to learn from a factory trained German mechanic how these cars worked.
He taught me a lot about how these cars worked and how to repair them. I learned a lot of tricks and methods to making all repairs on the Air Cooled type 1's,2's,& 3's, etc... I worked there for 2 years, but he wasn't teaching me a lot of how to build performance engines, and that's where my interest was.
I went to work for ECI, and learned how to build engines from a journeyman engine builder who was their high performance engine builder. I studied side-by-side with him for 14 months before deciding to start my own business, "Strictly Foreign!"
I also hired him to work for me, so I could continue learning from him. He also taught me how to rebuild stock and performance transmissions. In 1995 I moved my family and business up to Grants Pass, Oregon to be closer to family and away from the traffic and smog.
So here we are today,40 years later and we still love building VW's and supplying our customers with our products. We drive our VW's everyday, and drag race them here at our local track, where I've finished 2nd to years in a row in our VW points series with my '65 beetle I call the "Jawbreaker!"
We don't just build and sell these performance engines and transmissions, we use them & know first hand what makes them tick!! Each Turn Key engine is "Hot-Run Tested" on our tuning stand for over 45 minutes.
This process seats in the valves, cam and lifters. We then re-adjust the valves, set timing, jet and syncronize the carbs and linkage.
