the " you drive a what? a Thing, what the heck is that?" questions.

- I think I covered every stock brake part except the pedal and the blue hose. Let me know if I missed any.

- These number apply to ALL I.R.S. ('73 and later) Things, 181's, 182's, Treker's and Safari's. If you have a swing axle car ('72 and down) the front parts still apply but the rear gets goofy fast!

- "ALL" denotes Standard Beetle OR Super Beetle

I've had ACVW's for like 25-years now. I've always told the parts guy something like:

"I need the thingamajig that hooks to the doo-hickey"

Today, I bought a brake parts, with VW part #'s in hand (thanks to this sticky). The shop owner was so happy, I thought he was going to crawl over the counter and give me a hug. He know the #'s from memory and got exactly what I needed in about 30-seconds.

So 68-77 beetle rear 4 lug drums won't just bolt up? I need to find a rear drum that I can have drilled to I can bolt up my 15x7in Fuch's. the wide 5 adapters make the rims stick out past the fenders in the rear. Front is OK because I have a disc brake conversion and a narrowed beam. Anyone have some advise?

I don't see why you can't use the 4lug drums on your 181. I went the other way of installing the 181 rear drums on Bug rear supensions.
The type 181 add about 1/2in track width to each side. So going to the Bug drums you should have that much extra clearance in fender well.

Well I got a set of late 4lug drums that were drilled and studded. Also got a set of spacers that allow the axel nut to be tightend down all the way. I am pretty sure it will work. I will let you all know Sunday when I try to bolt them up.

I'm having trouble finding the front shoes listed. I'm trying to order from Cip1. I just got off the phone with them....they show and recommend the "537C" shoes for both the front and rear, Im assuming they will work?

To respond to the above question about brake shoes (though I suspect that the poster has figured out an answer already so this is for others):

I ordered a full brake rebuild kit from The Thing Shop had two boxes of shoes in the shipment, and both boxes said "shoes for front or rear."

So I'm guessing CIP1 is also correct.

I discovered tonight that the rear wheel bearings from any VW MK1, MK2 or MK3 (drum brake) so Rabbit, Golf, Jetta, Cabriolet 1975-1998

The part number for a kit is 191 598 625

So, on this note. my thing has 4 lugs. They don't have the spacers I believed would have been there but everything works as it should. So are these drums off a late model beetle and just direct swap over? I was expecting to find something that screams conversion or something but I haven't found anything out of normal except my 4 lug drums. Someone please help me figure out what drums these are so I can buy shoes for it.

Is there a list like this for other parts that are compatible or not?

Is there a rule for compatibility between Sedans and Safaris/Things? Obviously engine parts are the same, and body parts interchange is not, but what about the transaxle, Ball Joints, stabilizers, etc?

Have found front kits with the pattern that are "claimed" to fit but the only rears are wide-5.

I just took this disk conversion off a 74 Beetle chassis and put it on my 74 Thing. Works perfectly.

There is no reason why it won't work on a 73.

A reply to ecopine about transmission swaps The late bug tranny 71 up will fit but the cv joints are smaller. The thing has bus sized cv joints while bug tranny's are smaller I changed mine a few years ago after I got sick of the bungee cord usage in the mts of Conn.The bus and bug cv joints fit on the original axles. I got lucky as it's been at least 5 or 7 years ago.somaybe 20 k miles.I recommend changing transmission oil on a stick every 25 thousand miles or so.Also the wheel bearings are the same.I think. Also buy German ones unless you want to do the job twice ormore.. (the cheap way always comes out more expensive). Good luck Bill ..PR N Vt
