RHD verts used LHD mirrors? |
Yep.
Apart from one car (which I think had the mirror reassembled incorrectly as the owner thought it was wrong) all the other RHD car's I've seen have the mirror arm to the RHS of the central support, like LHD cars. |
I think the thing that most people don't think about was that back in the 50's when the RHD cars were being put together they didn't go crazy with a bunch of speciality parts since there were so few of them being built...hell they didn't even bother to put the locking door handle on the other side you think they are going to make a special mirror? I laugh when I see things like RHD wiper blade, RHD steering box.....really? anyone have a RHD throw out bearing for sale? |
i'm wondering though why vw offered rear view mirrors namely for lhd and rhd cars with different part numbers 151 857 523 vs. 152 857 523 (see 1957 parts manual). why so when parts are supposed to being the same? how did they differ if not as to the assembly of short and long sunvisor or the location of the mirror?
who can help it out? |

Question of curiosity.
Kabriolet- Convertible
Year of production 1956
How many produced?
How many imported to USA?
How many would one estimate are in existence today? _________________ .

Can any of you Oval Kabriolett owners list all of the things that would be different on a 1956 and '57 model year "European" (for example: German delivery) specification Kabriolett vs a "USA" specification Kabriolett? I'll start, you can add on every nit-picking difference you can come up with...
front/rear bumpers (Euro blades with short guards vs blades with tall guards and over-rider tubes for USA)
wiring harness
headlights (bulb vs sealed beam)
taillight assemblies? (looks like both versions use "snowflake" assemblies; bulb type probably different; is the fender location placement different or same on Euro vs USA?)
front fenders (USA got bullet turn signal assemblies, Euro got none)
rear fenders (Euro got rear gravel guards, did USA?)
speedometer (KPH vs MPH)
semaphores vs flashing turn signals
What else am I not thinking of?

Well, if you mean buying parts for the past three decades since I bought and stored it in the back of my garage, then yes. I've spent a pile of $s on NOS, new, repro and used parts and goodies for it, but no, I haven't started "the work" on it until now. The day after I return from hosting my VW Bus camping weekend over the upcoming Labor Day weekend ( www.bnnta.com ), we start with replacing of both pan halves, installing a new front apron, seat belt mounts and other assorted metal-related work to get it ready for my finish body and paint buddy... So, it's finally happening!

Bill, keep us posted as work progresses, it will be useful for all Kab owners.
I debate each time I drive my 56 Kab weather to just keep it as a well respected driver, or tear into what should be repaired? I always lean to just drive it.
It drives and handles just as it should.
The parts cost is now a factor, plus worthy bodymen/ painters are also hard to find, since my guy has gone on to greener pastures .
The Iceland green 55 ragtop has just been completed.
And Bill, I almost certain your Kab will turn out impeccable…what with the collection on parts and pieces you have collected throughout the years. And resources of connections.
Again please share your work as it progresses..a vert correct? _________________ .

I borrowed this photo from this thread back on page 24. Has anyone an idea whether that inner vapor shield is simply waxed paper or is it something else?
Has anyone found a modern and similar replacement material for that 60+ year old paper product. I could just use plastic sheet, but if available I'd try something more original looking. It has to be a moisture shield to protect the door card...

I am working on the window rubber, specifically the little piece at the rear of the door.
This picture is from Lar's thread elsewhere,
can anyone shoot post up an image of how this looks when completed?
The piece does not go fully across and line up with the chrome strips.
thanks |
good point.
when recently redoing the weatherstrips on my '58 vert, i found that the piece you showed will absolutely not fit without being shaped by cutting, as will the other weatherstrips. unfortunately there are no informations about how to place those pieces. considering the relevant side in the 1957 manual for the parts
gave me a hint how to place them - laterally reversed as i believe.
the 2 in 1 flowing channel to the left is serving as a drain for the moisture coming down from the rear window frame, leading it to the door jamb. right channel is for the chrome strip, with the elevation inbetween corresponding to the bottom of the vent frame front.
it works!
