An unusual alternator wound up on my bench. While it fits an upright engine like a standard Bosch AL82N, it has a removable plate which holds a one-piece regulator and brush holder assembly. This means the regulator can be serviced without removing the alternator from the engine - perfect for an upright engine bus! Problem is, it has no identifying markings, other than "823" stamped in the case. I suspect it is Bosch (at least the regulator is...), and it uses standard 6202 and 6203 bearings. Anybody know anything about these?

It's a Bosch AL82 alternator with an internal regulator.

All of the AL82N 's I have seen have the regulator bolted into the alternator housing separate from the brush holder. On this, it's one piece. Are you sure it's an AL82N part number? Maybe a different suffix, or something?

There are different versions of the AL82... it's one of them.

That style was used in the later bay window busses with 1600 ccm engines. They were very common in Europe.

BTW. you can install a standard regulator from a Rabbit/Golf or Vanagon. The all have the same mounting pattern. All you need is the long spade connector which you can solder to the new regulator.
