I am interested in building a 2 PC Pre-A 1949-1950's engine does anyone know if the VW 25hp case studs work with the PRE-A 356 heads? Also if they don't how did they build them to begin with did they change the case studs location or adjusted the heads? Please any help would be appreciated.

The location of the studs of all VW 25 and 30 hp and Porsche 2 piece cases is the same.
The 356 studs itself, 16 per engine, have the Porsche number 369 01 110. (not knowing if exactly the same as VW 25 hp till 12´53.)
(The Porsche studs for 3 piece cases, also 16, are different and have the number 539 01 118) (A-parts katalog till 9´59)
VW cases must be machined for bigger cylinders for 1300 and 1500 ccm Porsche cylinders.
Unmachined, the 25 hp VW case accepts Porsche cylinders for 1100 ccm only.
A late 25 hp VW alu case, so till mid January 1951 is good to start with.
Attention: already late 54 came the new 3 piece Porsche engine case, but around one year later, in October 55 came the new model 356 A.
So late 54 and all 55 pre A´s had already the new ("A-type") 3 piece case.
But all A, B, C, 912 have a 3 piece case. (many versions and updates there) |

Great thanks for the information. Do you know what early 356 heads work with that set up? Part number? Thanks in advance. _________________ 1950 Deluxe Sedan Build

What I see seems to be new cast altermarket cylinders and new pistons. Original Porsche used for bore 80 mm Porsche hardchromed alu cylinders that time.
For 1100 ccm and the first 1300 Porsche engines the 64 mm VW crank was used. The later 1300 and all 1500 used 74 mm cranks.
So here I can´t exactly see, what´s going on for the moment.
Suggest, ask the dealer who sold the parts.
But wondering, on your pic one 356 head is present. |
