I'm reinstalling a rebuilt nose cone on a 1960 Split Case Trans. Upon inspection both the main shaft and the pinion shaft nuts were loose. I want to make sure they are properly torqued before I reassemble.
Can anyone speak with authority to the torque specifications for these two nuts?
I know they get held in place with the locking tabs. How could they have gotten loose?
Can I simply torque them to spec. and they put the nose cone on? Or are there other considerations/measurements that need to be made? |

Split gearboxes are the same for type 1 and 2, except for the flipped ring gear (because of the reduction gear boxes on a type 2)
I’m not sure whether you would be able to secure both axles in an assembled gearbox to reach such torque specs btw.
For remounting the nosecose, you should measure the bearing preload and adjust this with gasket thickness or quantity (page 86)

I know I'm 2 years too late, but those contact patterns are no good. The coast pattern is too close to the ID of the ring gear, it needs to be centered on the tooth.

The 0.025 is a number associated with the pinion depth when using the factory tools that nobody uses today. It's not related to the backlash. |
Yes, that's what I was thinking, 3 years later. the engraved number is pinion depth from a standard. Backlash is backlash fairly standard for any gears, and not too critical as long as you have SOME and your pattern looks good.
If anybody could link me to a good thread on split boxes, it would be great.

Out of curiosity, what is the level of difficulty in doing this open, clean, repair of a split tranny? Considering a DIY. Out of 1-10, 10 being difficult, what would you say this is rated.
All things said I am a quick learner and can process information well.

I'll be doing this myself with my 1956 Single Cab. It has not driven in 60 years, needs all the rubber bits fixed anyway and I'd really like to install seamless axle boots, so good time to split it and have a look inside, anyway.
I've never actually put a split trans back together. I've overhauled about 30 other kinds of transmissions and don't get intimidated by this one. Best is to get it very clean and be quite orderly. I doubt you will actually need to change much shimming unless you change the main case or ring and pinion. Bearings are incredibly uniform in size. so if all you are doing is replacing some bearings and possibly the brass synchro rings and some small parts, it should go together like it came apart.
Of course, it is good to have a book, but a modern video, like Rick Long's would be good. Not sure Rick did one for a split trans, but I think so. The Bentley or German factory manual will show you the correct German way of doing things which is mostly worthless to a guy just putting in a few parts.

I just tore a split case down in my 55 build. Documented it fairly well. I will be going to a MCM to rebuild it with Scott in the near future. I will document the entire process during the rebuild, as this a much needed for the community. Keep watching my thread for updates on that trip!

All the split case transmissions that I have had or disassembled have been bare castings, no paint or treatment.

I just had my engine case and transmission case Chromated by Chris Childs. He did a great job! You can check out the pictures of it in my thread, page 87.

quick question... I have seen it on a thread somewhere before and I didn't save it which was stupid... no amount of searching has found it...
does anyone have the trans case bolt tightening sequence diagram at all?
