Well, I just didn't go out and drop money on a car. I built it myself from the ground up and took 7 years to get this far because I have to pay for everything up front. As for not knowing what I'm doing---- well I have been doing it for 23 years. I know what I am doing. This time I made a mistake and I paid for it. I knew better and did it anyway. That was the stupid part. Shame---Shame---Shame! Yes, I do agree there are a lot of people with more money than brains. Also, I still go out alone even after walking out of the desert twice. Yes, still stupid. NOT RECOMENDED !uglyoffroader |

Hahahahaha. but why light the car instead of sucking out some fuel and burning the rest of the desert foliage around you? _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

I have a sickness, I buy parts when I see them cheap. Now you might say whats wrong with that, well I'm unemployed right now and can not afford it. This is just part of my wall of shame [I should start selling some of it but then I wont have it any more]
theres 2 set of ICT's and a pair of Kadrons in the cabinet below all that.
Casey "the hoarder" |
Ahhhh... i too have stock piles of parts, no pics right now(at work), but i have a dresser in my shop that has one drawer full of ignition parts, 1 full of brake parts, 1 full of wiper parts, and 1 full of carb/fuel parts. also have a shelf full of boxes and undercabinet(20' long) full of other parts. I guess better than not having any spare parts. The shamefull part is that alot of these parts are garbage, but i can't seem to throw them away. _________________ My build:

earlier this morning while jacking my car up to adjust my brakes i noticed that my bilstein shock on the front driver had come off the grommet. whoops. but, when i pulled the shock all the way off i noticed that it was severely bent. NO IDEA how how my bilstien got that bent. (ill edit this post and add a picture in a bit.) Now i have to downgrade to KYB gas-a-just becaues i cant afford a new set of Bilsteins. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

That's just my carb stash, I would like to come up with a few more good DR cases so when they are hard to get.

I only have one 010 and it needs to be rebuilt, I might have a 019 I might part with but I have to think about it.

Bumping another old thread , this was a cool one to read. _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug
An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't. |

During my “why not do this?” Phase of troubleshooting my hot start issue I put in a backup electric fuel pump. I did it wrong, it caused nothing but trouble. Here is my buddy ( of flat fender aficionado magazine fame) after we broke down 7 miles into the desert. We fixed it. I removed the electrical pump. More on that later.

Did you rig the electric pump inline with the mechanical fuel pump sucking gas through it? I'm considering adding a backup electric pump for my 36hp, the stock mechanical pump on a 36hp often vaporlocks over 100*, so I've been thinking of adding a backup electric fuel pump to push fuel through when it's vaporlocked so I'm not forced to disassemble carbs and manually add gas on the side of the road any more. _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval

No pictures, but when I first built my fiberglass buggy, on Saturdays my wife and our 8 year old son, and 5 year old daughter would drive the buggy to our local outdoor breakfast place. I used to run a Holley Bugspray, and had just changed jets on it. I started it up in the driveway, so it would warm up, and ran back in the house to get the family going. My daughter was the first out, she came back in to tell me the buggy was on fire. When I put the carb top back on, it hung up on the float pin, and fuel ran out all around. I put out the fire with a beach towel the kids used to sit on, fixed the carb, and we went out to breakfast.
Cost me some burnt paint and a pissed off wife, that I had to convince we could still drive the buggy to breakfast! |

When I first got my Baja bug ten years ago it had a Bugspray. One day I was driving around and it started sputtering/ backfiring/ and bucking like crazy. So I pulled over and got out and the whole carb and top of the engine was soaked in gas. I said forget it and just called to tow it home. Probably was seconds away from igniting because it was making my eyes water. The tow truck driver said "I'm not supposed to take cars that are leaking gas but I'll let this one slide" and I said "thats good because its leaking oil too". Its hard to see but it was dripping onto the flatbed before he even got it level. I gave that carb to someone else, they didn't like it either, so we just tossed it into the woods. It's probably still there (I was younger and I don't condone littering).
Another time, I was driving to work and felt the clutch cable starting to break. I could feel the strands snapping and basically limped the last mile in 2nd gear. When I parked it the cable finally snapped. My co worker took me back home which wasn't far so I could get a replacement cable from my parts stash. I clocked out for the day and got to work on replacing it, but then my accelerator pedal cable snapped just as I was going to leave. It's very important to buy high quality cables and NOT to twist the clutch cable as you are adjusting it.
And then another time, I bought a project car, hooked it up to my tow bar. Drove down the street, turned right, and the thing wouldn't straighten out and started violently shaking. It's always the stupidest things.
So as you can see I've come a long way. I get my moneys worth with AAA. _________________ "when i go to drive it i get to like 5-10 mph it is at high rpms and gets higher the faster i go when i shift up to second the rpms drop is this normal or what and this is my first vw please help" |

I put a pump under the tank to just turn on for vapor lock, but for some reason it wasn't working. I am not an experienced mechanic so maybe I did something wrong. It would run and then stop sucking gas through the electric pump to the mechanical pump. Again, probably all my fault. But I am currently in the process of removing the mechanical one completely and just going electric ... |
Been there, done that, learn'd alot the hard way; 50 years ago! And then, after that, have had 50 years of nearly trouble free electric fuel pump service.
You had a really nice looking attempt:
What bothers me about this is that your pump is pushing gas DOWN, something gravity will do for us anyway!
Here's how mine is set up:
Some things to keep in mind:
Function over form: How it looks is not as important as how it works.
Lowest part of fuel delivery setup is near filter, before pump.
Entire setup should be below bottom of gas tank. |
