|
|
Hi,
I'm new to the VW world and recently purchased an abandoned father son project, a 72 square back. Build date in Nov. of 71.
One of the parts missing are the wiper arms. I referenced this thread:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=648259&highlight=wiper+arm and bought part #311 955 407 D.
Unfortunately that is the wrong part, or my car has different arm mounts. This is what the mounts on my car look like:
What would be the part number or a reasonable facsimile be for this?
Thanks |

The part number is correct. They should look like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/362175223934
New wiper arms are smooth inside the mounting hole. The get "splined" when installaled the first time. |

Thanks for your reply.
That image isn't what I received, the arms I have don't have the hole in the top of the mounting point as shown below:

I guess I'm going to have to return the ones I got.
Is there any beetle wiper arms that will fit on a 72 type 3, or a close approximation? I'm not looking for originality, but want this car to be a daily drive so need to be able to drive in the rain. |

I'd look in the Samba classifieds for them. Look for 71-73 as they should be the same. 70 was the first year for that mounting style, but they are set up backwards for the 71-73 (the 70 arms are one year only and park on the same side as the 61-69's, on the left side). I hope this helps.
P.S. Beetle arms are too short, same with super beetle and Karmann Ghia arms. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for your help.
The reason I'm asking about a facsimile is that I'm up in the west coast of Canada. There is only one vendor up here who sells parts for Type 3 so ordering that part number will probably get me the same incorrect part. Shipping and broker fees will make it expensive to get from the US (and maybe tariffs depending on the day of the week )
I'm going to try to source some used locally first. If not then I might have to bite the bullet and order a used one from one of the vendors advertising here. |

You might want to try a junkyard or two in your area. Maybe a good semi-complete rusty car might have them. Like I said, 71 thru 73 are the same, and park on the right side.
I think Nate modified a set of bay bus wiper arms for his Squareback years ago, but I don't know how he modified them. Just a thought. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Do you know what Nate's user name is? I can search for his threads to see if he described what he did.
A thought I had was to get some a bit longer than I need and cut them to length then weld them back together to get the right length. |

Not right off hand. Everyone here called him Nate, even on Shop Talk Forums. He owned a VW Porsche repair shop in northern Washington. You might try looking up his Squareback build on here, as he put a modified 914 front end under it, along with a custom large fuel tank, a 5 speed Porsche transaxle, and a 2700cc Porsche engine into it (a large t-4 engine). His thing was to take it hill climbing, race it against the clock, and took it to Bonneville to see what kind of time he could get out of it. He had a lot of fun building it, before he closed his shop and retired. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The later cars (71-73) used 15 inch blades, because they parked on the opposite side. Don't you still have a couple of late model parts cars Mike? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
