Title says it all. Some years of distributors had a retarded #3, I timed my bug with the #3 wire, does this distributor have a retarded #3 lobe?

Bosch part number is 0 231 170 034

Its 2 degrees of retard, which is within the margin that I dont trust my dwell meter to pick it up reliably. Id prefer to know for sure.

Got a good machinist square? Actually a regular small square will tell.

The cam is curved.

Pretty sure only the DVDA distributors had the 3* retard.

Appreciate it Glenn, I figured you would have the answer.

Do all the DVDAs have this? or was it only until doghouse shrouds were introduced. Im slightly considering going DVDA on my 1972 super, as that is what is period correct. Though Im not sure it would have any advantage besides emissions.

I have a vacuum only advance distributor 113905205T on my 1970 single port. When I checked the timing at idle this Spring I compared cylinder 1 to number 3. The timing of 3 was retarded when compared to 1.

The short aluminum bodied distributors such as 113 905 205 K and 113 905 205 T had the #3 cylinder retarded. This was on the non-doghouse fan shroud that ran hot on #3 cylinder. I've not seen it consistently on the distributors made after that. Sometimes you will find a distributor that has some offsets but nothing that is consistent that would tell you it is on all the distributors from the factory like that. Those early short aluminum ones mentioned have it on every single one.

What you can do to check your distributor is move the wire on your timing light. Take a note where it is on #1 with the base timing that you set. When you move it to the other cylinders you will see how far off they are. Sometimes it is important to use a specific cylinder for timing.
