Did big window cars still use the early style steering lock? I have a 60 euro steering lock and tube I could measure but its the later slab style not the early tube type.

Suggest to have a lool in VW "Reparaturleitfaden 1958 to 60". Also it depends on the kind of steering lock. Pics?

I think this means 58 model year up uses the SP 201C

Here is a pic of the oval version with the integrated start button

This looks like a transitional or replacement part with no button for starter and looks shorter to fit the square dash better

It’s fairly straightforward.

For domestic vehicles, what year did steering locks become mandatory? Im guessing that it was part of an option package based on destination. For these factory installed locks (no hole in dash for ignition switch?) when did they change styles?

It was '68 in the US. This coincided with the collapsible steering column and the ignition was integral with the upper part of the steering column assembly. Before that it was a replacement for the steering column mounting bracket.

sorry, by domestic i meant german market which required the steering lock at some point. maybe some other euro market also required it and was included in that specific m-code.

Ive had two euro type I, a 62 and my current 60. both had steering locks from the factory with no dash switch hole. not sure but did euro ovals have the hole in the dash for the switch? Ive also wondered about the shifter lock with integral ignition switch but that was later cars i believe.

All the literature around is for service install, the fact there is an m code for the lock means they were factory installed. Same for type II, factory installs had different dash setup (missing welded nut).

edit: looks like 7/61 germany required column locks, belgium 5/61. early part number for steering lock 111905851, accessory number SP201A for the long tube version.
