Suggest to have a lool in VW "Reparaturleitfaden 1958 to 60". Also it depends on the kind of steering lock. Pics? |

It’s fairly straightforward.

It was '68 in the US. This coincided with the collapsible steering column and the ignition was integral with the upper part of the steering column assembly. Before that it was a replacement for the steering column mounting bracket. _________________ Chris

sorry, by domestic i meant german market which required the steering lock at some point. maybe some other euro market also required it and was included in that specific m-code.
Ive had two euro type I, a 62 and my current 60. both had steering locks from the factory with no dash switch hole. not sure but did euro ovals have the hole in the dash for the switch? Ive also wondered about the shifter lock with integral ignition switch but that was later cars i believe.
All the literature around is for service install, the fact there is an m code for the lock means they were factory installed. Same for type II, factory installs had different dash setup (missing welded nut).
edit: looks like 7/61 germany required column locks, belgium 5/61. early part number for steering lock 111905851, accessory number SP201A for the long tube version. _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild
