Hello enthusiast of sport mechanics, Volkswagen and Porsche 356
Porsche 356 which is basically the same as a VV engine. What are the advantages of having a set of Straight cut cam gears?
In terms of performance, is there a gain to be hoped for?
I've heard that noise is increased…
My engine is a 1900cc for street use and I do. It want to have a few hp against tons of decibels!!!
Furthermore it add 400 more grams..

what is your feedback?

On a street engine, not worth it.
IF you had an engine which needed hefty dual springs and reved high there would be an idea in going straight cut because it would take a lot odf stress away from the cam bearings. Some tuners claim 1 hp gain @ 6000 due to less friction which may well be true. I believe that is a calculated numberthough, but I do not know.

Some people love the noise from straight cuts, some don´t. I belong to the latter group. I would never use straight cuts unless I had to.

I'm one that likes the mechanical whine they make. Mines in a buggy so to me it sounds great.

Knock yourself out, i'm sure you won't hear it over the dual cannon exhaust.

Different brands result in more or less noise.

Straight cuts provide less pressure on cam bearings, whether using regular VW dual springs or something more. To me it’s worth it.

Different gear sizing with the original gears becomes a non-issue.

Loud straight cuts can be annoying, but I still say cruising with the windows down you aren’t going to hear it.

CB Pro Straight Cuts are loud, regular CB straight cuts aren’t

I use straight cut in every engine unless someone requests otherwise . 1 i like the sound as does 90% of the people ive built for. 2 ive seen too many posts of stripped aluminum and mag gears and straight cuts are reasonably priced especially for the assurance.
And i have yet to find a set that are as loud as the “noisey” geardrive in a SBC i have

An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't.

Which do you prefer? CB straight cuts or Magnum? Or something else.

I have aluminum straight cut gears on my 1915cc. I don't even hear them over the exhaust. Maybe a little just above idle.

I have the CB 1399 in both of my engines, I can’t hear them at all. Switched over because I had 2 different engines wear the thrust faces of the cam bearings.
