I'm aware of several vendors that offer high quality repro 25/36 mufflers in Europe, but I'm wondering if there's anyone doing this type of work in the US. Ideally, this person would be able to make a 36 hp muffler customized to my vintage speed needs.
Comments anyone?
Cheers,

i can't help you with a fabricator, but I'd love to know what your vintage speed needs are?
I have thought of multiple possible variations on the cylindrical 4 tip muffler but don't have the knowledge to even begin to figure out what would work let alone work better than stock. |

I'm a little frustrated that I can hire someone to design a custom cam for my engine, but I can't find someone who can do the same for a muffler that appears stock. I've looked into the issue, and muffler design appears to be a very complex process that requires a lot of math, trail/error, and dyno time. There are a number of programs out there that professionals use to design mufflers, but they're very (5 - 20K) expensive.
I'll probably end up using a NOS German muffler I have and some TDE tail pipes. Speaking of TDE tail pipes, I tried to order some from Karmann Konnection, but they no longer carry them.
Cheers,

I went through this same search process last spring, but I found nothing better than the Vintage Speed products. At first I was planning on getting the 4 pipe version, but although they showed them on their website, they weren't yet shipping.
So I have the 2 pipe version.
Beware that these are not stock in appearance: the two outlet pipes are 51.25mm in diameter; noticeably bigger than stock.
I am happy with the weld quality and the sound - a little throatier than the stock muffler, but not much louder. (and they won't disappear after a few runs at Bonneville!) |

I just heard about an outfit in the UK that make exhausts for VW's and Porsches. It's called Turbo Thomas. Here's an image of one of their VW mufflers.
Does anyone know anything about them?
Cheers,

went through the same a few years back with no affordable options. I ended up buying a welder and cranked out my own. The main design is that of the 356B and I use a regular header for the primaries which can easily be re positioned for 40hp/36hp use. The 'collector/muffler' varies in size depending on displacement. The main chamber equals the total cc and each side chamber is 1/2. One large outlet seems to work the best vs two smaller pipes.
