I originally had the single arm spring plates but installed adjustable ones. Obviously the adjustable ones have 2 arms and now the covers do not fit. There's a recess where the single arm would go into and the cover would mount flush to the shock tower. But now with 2 arms one of them sticks out further. Do I need special covers? I can't seem to find any or even another example of this situation through searching. |

Might this style work for you? With thick "spacers"/stubs at each of the 4 mounting bolt locations? Ulu gallery.
Or make up such spacers for your current cover by finding thick metal pipe and cutting out 4 equal-length sections? Take a bolt with you- M10- to make sure it fits into the pipe. The 4 bolts are torqued to something like 25 ft lb so once in place, they should not move. You'll probably need correspondingly longer bolts than the ones you now have. M10 x 1.5 are the thread dimensions.
Fitting such a cover up to dual plates (lacolin gallery)-

I have a question about the adjustable spring plates. Can you use just the standard install tool? And since you have 2 plates now is there enough room for both of them on the spring perch? The plate that bolts to the A-arm appears to float and has the adjustment screw. while the front section has the stopper and catches the tension from torsion bar. |

Rome, yes something like that is exactly what I'm looking for. Who sells them? |

Rlfd, I'm not sure what tool you're referring to. But yes there's enough room on the perch. The only issue seems to be the covers not fitting |

I bought these and they seem sturdy. Chrome is all I could find when I was looking for them. _________________ '69 Beetle (pieces)

The chrome ones pictured above are not at all expensive so it's probably not worth your time to try to cut some sections of thick pipe.
I believe they're empi so anyone who sells empi ought to be able to get you a set. Those chrome plates will fix you right up, as long as you don't hate the fact that they'll be shiny under there... |

Paint the chrome ones whatever color you like ... the chrome will start to rust in a week. _________________ Brian

Anyone ever 3D printed a spring plate cover? I am going through the same issue right now and was going to see if my son would 3D print a cover in a carbon fiber filament blend he’s got. |

The spring plate covers are fairly highly-loaded structural members of the suspension system. That's why they are made out of 2 piece sheet steel pressings, with added stiffening ribs & lips, etc. Highly doubtful one could make a 3-D printing of that part which has anywhere near the strength and stiffness equivalent to the original steel assembly. Maybe if the 3-D printing was super-duper thick and chunky? Hmmm... Still wouldn't bet on it, though. _________________ 1971 Standard Beetle — fairly stock / driver

I have the sway-away adjustable spring plates on my '72 pan.
I bought some of the chrome ones with spaces and then discovered they are not needed on my car. The stock covers fit tight over the spring plates.
I will give the chrome ones to anyone for the cost of shipping. |

Thank you guys for your responses! I am going to forgo the 3D print this go around but my son has some really strong filament. The strength has been pretty impressive. That said, I don’t think suspension is going to be my first experiment with testing the strength. I have some of the EMPI covers on order and will get them by tomorrow. Hoping to share the before and after of the set up! Thank you again! |
