Working again, trying to install the new fuel filler items.
Using the original fuel filler tube, should it be painted and the interior of the tube treated with something?
As you can see it's pitted on the tank end and has light "dusting" of rust on the exterior and interior.
Also I was aligning it up and appears to be a tight fit with just the filler tube, without all the neck hose and clamps.

Looks like about $40 for a used filler in the classified section. The pitting concerns me just a little bit as that is where it seals and would be better if smooth. That said I bet this one would work with new rubber.
If it was mine I'd soak it in a white vinegar and water bath overnight to etch away the surface rust inside and out. Then I would prep the outside with a wire brush and paint prep (or lacquer thinner) and paint the outside with a light coat of Rustoleum self etch primer (green stuff) followed by two coats of Rustoleum satin black. After it cured for a week I'd spray the inside with WD40 and let that evaporate for a day. Then I would install it. I would use Permatex blue fuel resistant gasket dressing on the filler neck where the rubber seals to the filler neck and to the tank, as I have had great experiences with that stuff. It aids with assembly if you assemble after a minute to let the solvent evaporate but before it sets up and gets super sticky, then I'd let the fully assembled situation sit overnight before filling the tank to let the rubber conform under the pressure of the clamps and the gasket dressing fully set up to the sticky wax it is.
Anyway, that's been the sum total of my fuel system shenanigans, in Beetles, and Vanagons, and other assorted nonsense. _________________ Big Time 1988 Vanagon Westy
