Here's your indicator:
It's a little different than the previous indicator: the center pin (15) is 12 volts from the ignition switch fuses instead of ground; ground is pin 31. The 'K' terminal goes to the brake light switches. When it has 12 volts applied, the transistor turns on, illuminating the light. Pin 61 goes to the parking brake switch. When it is grounded, diode D2 turns on the light. Diode D1 tries to protect the transistor if you hook it up wrong. |
I have this light in my dash , but it's the 71 with only 3 wires can I make the later one function for now? _________________ 1973 super 2110cc

Sure. Just insulate the blue 61 wire and leave it disconnected. _________________ '71 panel, now with FI

I tried to wire just the 3 wires, and it comes on when I start the bus and shuts off when I push the brake _________________ 1973 super 2110cc

- Unplug the connectors (or the red wires, if the connectors are missing) at the brake switches and see if the indicator is dark. If so, reattach the connections, one switch at a time, and see if one of them causes the indicator to light. If so, there's a problem with that switch or its connections.
- If unplugging the brake switches doesn't cause the indicator to go dark, unplug the red ('K') wire at the indicator. If this causes darkness, then the issue is in the wiring somewhere. Otherwise, something's bupkis with the indicator itself.
Basically, applying 12 volts to the 'K' terminal causes the indicator to illuminate; no connection or 0 volts should cause it to go dark. All this assumes the black wire is connected to the 15 terminal and the brown wire is connected to the 31 terminal on the indicator. The black wire should have 12 volts on it relative to ground and to the brown 31 wire. _________________ '71 panel, now with FI

Thanks to Mr. Dorr, I got my brake warning light fixed!
I went and ordered a couple of the 1n4148 diodes, from Digikey. 10 cents apiece ,with $7 postage.
I have a good friend who is very knowledgeable in these matters.
First he figured out which diode was bad. It was the little one tucked in behind a little black box. Undid the solder. Got the old one out.
And worked the new one in.
And soldered!
Put in the bus. Success! The light goes out as it should when bus is running.
The blue lens in my light is made from a plastic six pack holder.
Thanks again to Mr. Dorr! _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |

I have an odd problem. My light remains on if I depress the brake. Then it goes off. It turns back on when I release the brake. The parking brake does not seem t effect it. Thoughts? |

Welcome!
I'd start by removing both switches and washing them out with brake cleaner, then flush out the entire system while bleeding it. It sounds like there's a lag on one of the switches, possibly caused by sediment accumulations. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
