So I need a new Optima battery, a pricey purchase, but they are excellent for a VW/ Porsche 914 as they dont leak acid, a weak point in the 914.
I find a good price on Amazon for the Optima, but Amazon is not allowed to ship this battery to a California address!
California has Lithium ion Amazon trucks on its roads, a far more dangerous battery than a Optima. The elementary school near me has Lithium ion electric car chargers on school grounds, Tesla power walls are given tax credits to place in homes, etc... But that little Optima battery is prohibited to be shipped to California.
Golly, that is hypocritically bad.
Amazon even refuses to ship the 40 watt reflector light bulbs to California, the bulbs I use for a heat source for my 53 year old pet turtles, I have to have them shipped to an out of state friend, then sneak them in when visiting him. But this battery I need now
Where to get a good deal on an Optima battery?
Dam them.

It has to do with Prop65 and many sellers of automotive parts on amazon will not sell to California address. It happens to me when I looking for fuel parts.
I usually end up going to Ebay to find what I need.
Batterymart.com is where I buy my Odyssey batteries. They carry many different brands of batteries.

Maybe you need a weekend away from there. Like....what part of California do you live in?
Take a road trip to Vegas or somewhere close and have Amazon ship it to your hotel room and "bootleg" it back!
In fact....make it worth your while. If you gonna bootleg....BOOTLEG! Ask some of your local buddies what banned automotive products they need. Like....MEK, Berrymans Chemtool etc.
Bring back a meager 200 lbs of stuff at a minor delivery charge and you made a profit and probably paid for your battery!

I use fire starting fluid purchased from Home Depot as a substitute! Works great for reducing Shellac!

From our Alcoholic Beverage Control:
Section 23403 thus expressly prohibits the retail sale (without a prescription) of undenatured alcohol that is an alcoholic beverage (for example, grain neutral spirits) that is in excess of 60 percent alcohol by volume (120 proof).
Everclear is a grain neutral spirit.
California's laws suck.
Denatured alcohol, Paint thinner, turpentine, mineral spirits plus several others now are all illegal.
Optima batteries aren't illegal, I think the OP just wants a better price.

And you have expensive electricity (I pay under 12ยข per kWh) and you have income taxes (none in WA) and you have that stupid "prop 65" (if I was selling something I would NOT waste time figuring that restriction on interstate commerce). Then I look at your state and see almost no wild waterways and horribly degraded sport fishing due to the environmental destruction (while claiming to be so green). I'm staying up north, thank you very much!

We use San Diego Gas & Electric electricity (supposedly, highest in the nation).
$ .43 kwh before baseline $ .54 kwh above baseline.
We had three nuclear power plants and the environmental wackos closed them down. The papers said at the time of installation of the first nuclear plant at San Onofre electricity would be so cheap we wouldn't even have meters.
Why anyone wants to move here is beyond me.

I did my part 35 years ago and got out. Glad to help 
Twice a year I bootleg high ticket and hard to get items to my friends and family in California. Oregon doesnโt have sales tax. Itโs too bad the sales tax wonโt be collected in California to fix all the roads and improve schools The Oregon Coast is a nice place to roadtrip (vacation) this time of year and stock up on items mentioned above while your here. Did I mention, no sales tax.
