This past weekend, while driving my 1971 Double cab, I noticed most guys, gave us a thumbs up or or honked in appreciation of the VW, unlike women who were annoyed and drove past us at a high rate of speed and brake checked us. Specially women in Teslas and in newer sports cars. WTF??

I also noted, the youth did NOT care for a cool old car.

Geez Martin, getting nothing but love down here. Wink

In truth, most don't even bat an eye. Any who do react are pretty positive (waving, thumbs up). Have never gotten stink eye from anyone, even when I'm puttering along below the speed limit. Are you sure their ire isn't being directed at a nearby cybertruck?

When I had to drive my 71 bus in heavy traffic taking off from stop lights I would get a lot of disgusted looks as people were in a hurry and I was slowing them down. Also on the interstate some truckers were none too happy with me in the right lane doing 60 to 65 when they were stuck behind me. I sometimes would get the air horn as they came by. Oh well.

I suspect it's mostly due to the speed you are going, and peoples impatience seems to be equally divided between genders, I get similar dirty looks when driving the Acura only 10-15 over the speed limit.

Er, um ...
Anyone behind me.

I always shift into neutral to apply brakes (unless a panic stop) approaching a red lite or stop sign. I NEVER sit there while holding clutch in.
There's a minor delay as I engage clutch, shift to 1st, & then take off. I can sometimes beat a Camry off the line to about 40mph - roll of eyes emoji.

I like to drive kinda spirited but I don't flog it.

I get thumbs-up everywhere. Especially when stopped. I was at a convenience store a few weeks ago and a pair of very young girls pulled in next to me and gave me a nice wave as they walked by. But I figured that was due to my rakish good looks. Laughing

I haven't had any negative looks or reactions (only smiles and thumbs up) as I drive whatever the speed the traffic is moving at and return to the right lane after passing.

I wish others in VWs or any other vehicles, would get out of the left lane even if they are doing the speed limit, to let traffic flow!

I generally get more positive reactions from men when stopped. An occasional female will smile or thumb-up me.

Occasionally a very young child, usually male, on the sidewalk will stare google-eyed as the car goes by.

Out on the road however, it is overwhelmingly males who will do the typical tailgate and/or whip-around and/or cut-off. Ya know, testosterone.

in my vanagon, i rarely get a wave, unless it is from another vanagon owner. I get impatient tail gaters, they zip around me, but I catch them at the next light.
Now me older Bugs, my 914, they get waves from drivers in all sorts of cars.

The Vanagon aint got the charm of the older classics as of yet

Everyone likes my baja in around town. I'm an inconvenience on the freeway so I typically stay off it. Driving a manual trans car sucks in traffic anyways. I get the most thumbs up from the cops!

Women have more sensitive noses than men. I suspect they don't like the smell of un-catalyzed exhaust.

Women don’t give shinola about you drive. They are too busy looking out for each other, trying to get paid fairly, and protecting their health care rights. They care about your car even less than your bald head.

They get paid fairly, and have the same rights as men. They also can have interest in vintage VW's just as men may.

Everybody! If you get stuck behind me, don't like to drive fast so 55mph on the interstate, state highway and turnpike is pretty much my max unless there is a trooper cruising the turnpike then I bump up to 60mph which is the minimum allowed. And before somebody says it, No, I am not concerned or worried about getting run over.

Life is to short to speed around, miss out on the scenery and the pleasure of the cruise.

I remember seeing "2 Slow, 2 Bad" stickers on VW busses when I drove my 71 camper up the west coast in the mid 90s.

The right lane on freeways was often referred to as the Volkswagen lane back in day. Laughing

My 1200cc 40 hp bus used to go up steep grades in the Sierras on the shoulder in first gear. Highway 50 is very steep and the air is thin near the top.

They get paid fairly (yeah right), and have the same rights as men (by law maybe, but in practice?). They also can have interest in vintage VW's just as men may (true!).
