Thanks, I was talking about (and added clarification) of Tether Anchors. Good to know about seat belt bolts being welded to the body, never heard that before...

Is it all vehicles or just a Vanagon?

The seat belt bolts are not welded. The nut on the underside is welded to the body so when you remove the bolt the nut stays there.

I just had to cross this bridge on my Syncro Westy, unfortunately welding in harness attachments points just isn't an option given the location of the gastank - I had a local welder build this for me... Obviously the 40 degree angle isn't there but seemed like the best available option.

We ran a cable between the attachment bolts for each end of the lap belt. Plenty strong, stays out of the way when we fold the bed down, the tether runs straight - not at an angle, and easy to reach. If you're interested I can post a pic next week.
was this for a rear facing set up? If so I would love to see photos. Thanks!

Hi,

I installed the Ford TAs about where boof1306 put his, a bit more far forward. Technically, they’re supposed to be at a 30 degree angle, but that’s on the engine lid, so a now go. 30 degree up goes through a cabinet, also no go.

My pics all went away…will take new ones and send them to you in the morning. Please remind me if I forget.

While things for our vehicles haven’t changed, I’m no longer a Certified car seat technician, it lapsed during Covid and I’ve yet to renew it…so, now answering as someone just from the .V.W community.

Cheers!

Tammy

Hi Tammy!

I read your posts a few times here and were very helpful to understand what's need.
Car seat stuff is overwhelming.
I just got myself a baby car seat (Doona/stroller), it was on sale with a free baby, so I went for it.
I bought an extra base. I like that it can be used with the Vanagon lapbelts.
Some friends with a kid needed to install a child seat, so I made this bar, inspired by other members solutions found here

I commented on this thread:

Hi,

You’re installing a rear faced car seat?

You do not need a TA for a rear faced seat. My oldest was in Kindergarten before he went forward faced. My youngest was heavier and was 3-4 before forward faced.

Legally here, you have to be something like 20lb, some seats require walking. Safety wise you you want the child to be as old as possible with the best possible muscle mass and bone density.

Hi,

Please skip the bar and just use the seatbelt. It’s tested, safe, and legal.

Yes, by 3 most kids are FF. I’ll get updated pictures of my installed TA.

We're still rear facing with our daughter. I got this guy which can be bolted to the firewall or just use the included straps for the anchors.

I know nothing about this device, but know the lap only belt works great and is safe, tested, and legal...

Ford will give you free ones if you go and ask for Latch anchors for a 1990 Ford Festiva. If it doesn't work, DM, I'll look up numbers of similar ones...

Cheers

Editing to ask, how would you even fold the bed down and/or sleep with that secured to the frame of the vehicle? The Ford latch slides nicely under the mattress and has never bothered me...

Hi Tam, any chance you have this pics? Need to figure out a forward facing car seat in my 87. Seems like you might have a decent solution. TIA!

In case pictures never materialize, and FWIW, can share that we never used a latch in our 1970 bus. We held the seat with the lap belt and it was completely secure. The belt is designed to hold a person and the harness in the car seat is designed to keep the little one safe. We also used the seat in our 84 Vanagon with a lap belt and it was secure. We recently installed a shoulder belt because we had to move to a booster seat, but that seat also isn’t latched. The belt keeps the seat and the kid where he needs to be.

It’s not letting me upload a picture to tinypic, says it’s too large. I took a picture of the picture with my iPad, and that didn’t work either. Is there another forum people use?

Will try to DM you the picture and some info on a car seat tech in OR.

Edited to add
It let me add a picture using this forum here. Sorry if that’s not the right spot!
