I've been in the glass trade my whole adult life. A client wanted me to buy and install some glass in her mid 60's beetle, said it was all new with correct marking and this was the crowning touch to her car from College.
I looked at the glass on a couple of sites and they all seem to be selling the same parts, rather pricey in my opinion. What caught my eye was the"AS2" script on the glass. This is OK for side and and rear windows but the front glass needs to be "AS1" which is Laminated. The other parts are tempered and when they break they just blow up, like your glass when it gets broken into in Oakland.
I sent an Inquiry to one of the vendors and got back a rather short curt reply highlighted in RED. Be a careful consumer here and know what you are buying. If you intend to put this in your car and go on a long trip or have your spouse or kids with you, you're playing with fire. This is like driving on tires that have aged out.
I don't think the vendors were malicious just ill informed. I suggested to them that have a disclaimer to protect them from liability when one of these windshields blows up on the highway and your vision becomes obscured and you use your hand to push the broken glass so you can see.
Tempered windshields were outlawed in Europe and many countries in 1983. Look it up and make your own decision.
Do not lock this up. This what Evertt told me to do. There's no such word as Temperated (Inside Joke).

Thank you! I actually had purchased one of the NEW windshields listed in the classified section that has the logo applied to it. I reached out to the vendor, Kaefer-Nostalgie, and they could give 2 shits about the issue. Irresponsible is the word that comes to mind! I guess it is really “buyer beware”! _________________ Jimbo

I *ALMOST* made that same mistake as VW_Jimbo, buying a windshield from Kaefer-Nostalgie a few years ago. This was when they proudly announced they had just introduced a 65-71 Convertible windshield, for a reasonable price compared to the current Chinese 'shitte'. They even came with the "correct" ( ) Securit logo for each individual year's windshield.
When I contacted them ready to order one for my '67, I asked them if these windshields were tempered (Sekurit) or IF they had any DOT approved orig. laminated available too.. (Sigla, Kinonglas-Kristal, etc.) They told me they're all tempered glass, and had no plans to make them in laminated form. I told them "no, thanks"... _________________ 1967 VW Convertible, owned 35 years.

There are also some posters on the SAMBA who have suggested in threads that it is OK to reproduce any glass standard etchings on VW car glass to "maintain" originality. This seems to be regardless of whether the glass meets the standard or not. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery
