I am restoring a 65 with a single speed 6v wiper. I pulled the wiper, took the motor cover off, cleaned everything up and added new grease. I bench tested it and it ran good. I replaced the wiper shafts and the bushings and lubricated every moving part. Reinstalled it in the car. I'm also doing a 12v conversion, so I wired in a 12v to 6v 10 amp 60 watt voltage converter. Here's a link to the one I used: https://a.co/d/ibRn00Q
So now for the problem. It doesn't work. It returns home fine. So I assume it's grounded good. I tried removing the voltage drop from the circuit and it worked on 12v for about 15 seconds before blowing the fuse. When I unplug the output wire from the voltage converter, and turn the wiper switch ON, it's showing 6volts on my multimeter. But when I plug the output wire into the motor it shows 0 volts. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next? |

The convertor and the motor aren't using the same ground. From the looks of the convertor you're using. Grounds are 'unique' for VW wipers. Some are switched grounds others are connected by the mounting of the switch. _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 45 yrs - Plan B: '72 Ghia

You were on the right track. I got it running and it was an issue with ground.
For other people looking for a solution in the future, here is what I did:
Originally I had terminal 53 on the switch connected to the + input on the converter and the + output on the converter connected to 54d on the wiper motor. And I had 31b on the switch connected to the - input on the converter and the - output of the converter connected to 31b on the wiper motor. Turns out 31b is an internal ground only for Park and is separate from the chassis ground.
So I left the positive side like it was. And I moved the - input on the converter and grounded it to the body where the wiper assembly mounts. And I moved the - output of the converter to terminal 31 on the wiper switch. I should mention that I have a 2 speed switch despite having a single speed wiper motor. I believe it's the only one you can buy new and it was already on the car. |

If you have a junk yard handy the old Volvo 240 station wagon rear window wiper has some great 12v parts - the wiper motor look just about the same just a different mounting studs _________________ '57 type 1 Blackberry
