So did you modify them a lot from what they were originally?

Thank you all for sharing pics and info.
Thinking about kind and color of original paint, phosphat, primer, filler...
What was used at all?
It seems, there was no red-brown primer used, as on many kubels.
Also inreresting, the rear hood. It seems, it had (already or still?) the cut out for the wartime licence/brake light, or the late 46 to 52 popes nose.
No round opening for warm air outlet on lower A-pillar.
Area of production date and numbers?

I did change them a fair amount. I have another pair of a different brand that I have not modified … I will snap a pic of the two side by side Cool

The one on the left is a bit bigger but it is real close to what I started with.

I said I would post up information on this wonderful survivor as it came to me , with that said….

The Journey of this car is , it was originally put in the hands of the American Government in Germany , shortly after that it was brought to the US and sent to GM as a test vehicle. In March of 53, it was sold to private hands in Royal Oaks Michigan. Then on June 4th 1954, it exchanged ownership once again. After many, many years that owner passed and the his Son sold it to the current owner in 1996. Very Happy

Wow, someone's spot weld cutters have been busy! Love the floor in your shop! Makes it easy to sweep up the inevitable rust crumbs.

While the Beetle Body is down with the fine folks at American Stripping I thought I would post so behind the scenes shots.

Here is the Chassis rite after the Body was removed, for what was likely the very first time since the original marriage of the two.

We believe the halves are useable condition, we will have a better understanding of once it has been media blasted.

46!!! I'm torn, as I really was stoked on the original paint, and it didn't seem to be a lot of rust from the pictures, but I know when you start to unbolt something on a 79 year old car and the steel starts to turn with it, Laughing Laughing
so I'm sure it has a fair share of rust hidden under that paint. Popcorn

^^^ Hello^^^

The original color is Black. That was a ok repaint, definitely not worthy of this build.

I agree it was not terribly rusty. I was very happy to see after all these years there was less then would be expected for a Kar of this Vintage.

Laughing Laughing Ohhhh, I couldn't tell from the pictures; I thought that the paint looked mighty healthy for being that old. I get it; my 50 had a used car Picasso paint as well that I'm correcting now.

The green paint of the chassis is good visible. The front tunnel was black.
