Britain's last surviving World War Two Victoria Cross recipient, John Cruickshank, has died aged 105.
The flight lieutenant, from Aberdeen, earned the honour for an attack on a German U-Boat while piloting a Catalina flying boat in June 1944.

I can remember in the 50's and 60's as a small child watching the Catalinas taking off in Rose Bay, Sydney Harbour and wondering how they cleared the harbour of yachts and skiffs off their "runway". No way you could easily do that today with the amount of boats in the harbour. There is also a beautiful restaurant called Catalina in Rose Bay in homage to that history if you are ever in the area.

http://www.seaplanes.com.au/history/

Flying boats were used from the 30's to fly 14 passenger Empire flying boats from Sydney to London. A short 10 day trip compared to 40 days by ship.

For many years there was a PBY living here on Lake Pend Oreille. I was on a pay phone with my dad one time back in the 90's when the PBY was taking off, and he instantly identified it by the sound.

There's still a flying boat operating here on Vancouver Island: a Grumman Goose, the plane featured in TV shows like Tales of the Gold Monkey.
I took a cruiser flight on it last summer. Amazing experience!

PBY Catalina's were very versatile during WW2. It was a PBY searching for the Japanese fleet that made the 1st sighting of elements of that fleet before the battle of Midway began. As stated they were used for anti submarine operations in all theaters and also operated by the British and Australians. I think I remember reading a few years ago that the last flyable example in th US had crashed and was a total loss.

He was great. I just watched him in the 1984 film "The Hit" last week. And who could forget "The Limey"?
He was always a presence.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: No more fucking ABBA!

Great film. And he was great in it.
