I have a 77 European bus with no head rests and I wonder if the support for the head rests is hidden inside. I can feel through the padding that there are holes underneath but is the rest of the support there? Like to know before cutting.
Thanks,

If they are VW bus seats yes. You should also be able to feel the headrest mounting tubes running down the back of the seat as so.
Good luck

Thanks.
I am apparently out of luck then. While there are holes in the top of the frame, the welded in tubes and bracket marked as "Headrest mounts" on your photo are not there. I guess I have to look for some US seats if I want headrests.

Which seat frames are you looking for? Front, middle and rear bench seats or all? |

Just something to consider, here... Since it is a '77, it could accept later Vanagon seats, with no modifications to the bus. The Vanagon seats are more comfortable, and some come with armrests. If you can find them, it is a worthy upgrade!

Thanks for the tip. I will explore that.

Would it be possible to weld in those headrest mounts / receivers on the seat backs of an Early Bay? _________________ '56 Early Split & '69 Early Bay

All depends on your welding and fab skills, it's just metal. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I too am very interested in adding head rests to my 1978 bus. While my bus was originally 'Canyon Brown' the front seats were previously reupholstered in Westfalia Green (which I am a big fan of).
I have 'pressed' on the back of the seats and confirmed that the 'tubes' are indeed in there.
I have discovered that these exact covers are sold 'as-is' by Bus Depot, so I assume the PO purchased them there.
I also see that their description simply says "Cut holes for headrests if needed", so I was wondering how difficult this procedure is, and led me to a few questions:
- Does one simply cut circular holes through the material at the relevant locations?
- Does one do this with the upholstery installed? (to ensure the holes are in the right location?
- Or, do I need to mark the holes and remove the upholstery in order to cut this?
- What stops the material from stretching or tearing any further at the hole location?
I would love to hear from someone that has already done this procedure successfully so that I can do it right. |

I ran into this issue with my Beetle. I’m running the one year only ‘67 front seats and you have to cut a custom hole for the seat latch release mechanism. I cut the hole and it stretched. I am/was so pissed! All that time and money and now I gotta look at that stretched hole. I’m gonna see if I can have a upholstery guy fix it for me. _________________ __________

If your seats didn't come with headrests from the factory, there might not be headrest supports inside the seat. I just dismantled my '75 Bay's front seat and there are only holes for headrest on the frame, but not the additional support, as seen on the photo in beginning of this topic.
If you have the headrest with you, could you measure the outer diameter of the leg, that goes in to the seat? I don't have headrests yet, but I need to fabricate the supports. _________________ Type1 1300 '72

Do head rests even get used in Buses or are they just there because the government thinks it knows better? _________________ Everything burns if you get it hot enough. |

My bus did originally come with head rests and I can feel the supports inside the seat (similar to the first picture in this thread).

Here are all the dimensions, however, you also need a pair of headrest guide sleeves (Part: 211-881-861)
Headrest Leg: 22mm
Headrest Guide Sleeve (Inner): 22.5mm
Headrest Guide Sleeve (Outer): 26mm
Headrest Guide Sleeve (Flange): 40.6mm |
