One I saw in a junkyard up in the Yukon. Story is, owner of the yard died recently and his family has inherited the whole kit and kaboodle. This one is too far away from me to grab. If someone here lives up north I can give you the location, but its pretty much the only junkyard in that province so you probably know about it lol _________________ Erik |

Picked up this ‘68 westy today. It’s crunchy but not too bad for a coastal island bus. Pretty darn solid underneath, put it up on the lift and gave her a once over. Definitely a project so we’ll see what direction we’re going to go. I’ve been out of vws for a while, should be fun to see what’s changed in the past few years.
Greasy hands make for blurry pictures. |

Nice bus! I like that paint scheme actually. Was the roof open to the elements? _________________ Erik |

Thank you. The po took off the top and installed a sunroof so the roof is sealed. I have the original luggage rack but the hinged portion was used on another bus years ago. I’m not a fan of the early bay westy top so passively looking at other options.
The paint I like, do what I can to keep it up. |

I've seen a mailbox on a back road painted like a Split Bus, so today I ventured up the long driveway and talked to the lady that lived there, they have her late husbands '74 high roof, pretty rough shape...

Have a look at this 1969 double slider - picked up last weekend
It served as a radio kombi (9-seater) in the austrian army.
Already had a couple of civil owners over the last decades and was last registered in 2007.
The previous owners told me it was running when parked.
Still has some equipment from back then, like the roof rack and an antenna on top (can't be seen on the pics, as it is in resting position). Also behind the rear bench there is a divider and some shelves built in in the rear.
As you can see, it has no rear window (from VW factory) and the rear side windows also are closed (in terms of no glasses).
It still had the original double-flipper middle seat - even though it was placed in the third row. And the bench in the second row seems to be from a barndoor bus

Wow, nice find!
That middle seat caught my eye in the Gallery as an early seat but I didn't look at the legs.
It has 6 legs, correct? Yes, this is a Barndoor/Wolfsburg factory Bus middle seat and it was used up through early 1956
How much was the Bus because that middle seat is worth a lot of money. _________________ How to Post Photos

I picked up the bus with a friend - we are both bus guys and already expected the seat to be a split seat - maybe one for a mango, as you can spot a light brown color surfacing on the lower right corner of the pic.
BUT neither of us had the idea to count the legs when buying the bus.
We only realized the next day, already back home, when i had a closer look at the bus! So to answer your question: yes, it has 6 legs!

Very nice find! Both of those seats are rare, crazy to find that six legger in there. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

I did not notice the brown but it looks like the upholstery from a 1955-56 non-Barndoor Deluxe so maybe it's original upholstery under that cover?
If the original upholstery is still in good condition that would be even cooler! _________________ How to Post Photos

So here is how the bench looked before i brought the bus home..
then i removed the covers...
you can still see the cover on the rest that flips:
would you guys say this is the original upholstery or might there still be something underneath it?
I probably can't make it to the garage before next week, therefore can't have a look at it untill then..
as you can see, the bus has vanagon rails welded to the legs underneath.
crazy to think, that this barndoor bench was even placed in a T3 / vanagon!
But i am certain that i can remove them quite easy.
and on the very last pic, on the upper left corner of the back rest, you can see some stains. but these are just leftovers of duct tape that i have to remove.
Whoever did the upholstery, was real hero.
He covered the corners with felt and duct tape, just clamped the added covers to the underside of the bench and additionally also used to screws of the handles on top to fix the covers in place.
He only stitched like 4 holes on each side of the flip-rest - but even there he made the holes on hidden areas - the undersides outer points to be more precise. _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com

It was just a seat 25-30 years ago, and even then may have been owned by someone who gave two shitzs about "rare-correctness". If anything this is a perfect example of where these seats end up other than the garage or the dump.
Its only we psychopaths that dottle and wax nostalgic when we see a rare, hard to find bit that interests us. _________________

So after being busy with christmas stuff last week, i managed to drive to the garage again and bring the seat back home. What do you say about this?
Black vinyl and red beading surfacing under this brown leather cover..
So i guess i will rip another layer off the seat tomorrow! _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com

Yes, black with red beading is Barndoor Deluxe.
This keeps getting better. |
Right!? This seat is like a russian puppet (Matryoshka doll) - under every layer comes another one!
i'll carefully get rid of the brown leather this evening to resurface the original upholstery. More photos will follow.. _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com
