Need your input
We have a 1995 eurovan camper, 5cyl, manual
Clutch is starting to slip
Burns a little oil
Failed Nox emission
210,000 miles no history of timing belt change
How hard is it to pull engine & transaxle
to replace clutch and go through motor
Any suggestions for info?
Thanks

My wife drives a 93 EV and if I need to pull the engine I will part it out and purchase her a new ride. I have not been impresed with the van except that all small things I have been able to repair myself. My wife loves it due to the size alone. this is just my 2 cents.

i would seek a professional opinion about this. a timing belt replacement is very easy because of the way the engine compartment opens up. it could be that pulling the engine may not be necessary or may be very easy.
think i paid about $180 including the belt at a honest, reliable, long in the business vw dealer. of course another dealer quoted $1500 for a belt replacement - but the guy spoke with an accent you'ld expect from a back woods gas station in the rural south near an interstate. |

tgrogan and fastwagons
thanks for the input
we got a quote in CA for 1600 and 2000 for the clutch alone
we think that if a complete pull is "doable" for a shade tree mechanics
we could fix all the problems at once.
We are looking for someone who has swapped out a euro motor or has info on doing it. If we get some positive feedback then we will purchase the manual ($200) and investigate further
It looks like the front grill and radiators come out making the job easier
Parting it out is an attractive option, though.
thanks again

Here is the manual on a CD for less. I say do it yourself with a handy friend. It will take you less than a day out and less than a day in. What do you have to lose?
